FUHSD adds position to address unconscious bias

The Fallbrook Union High School District board voted 5-0 June 14 to approve a new position which will provide unconscious bias training. The teacher on special assignment position will formally be called Multi-Tiered System of Support.

In addition to providing unconscious bias training, the Multi-Tiered System of Support teacher will implement restorative justice practices. Fallbrook High School is also a No Place for Hate school and the teacher will also support the No Place for Hate program.

The teacher will implement restorative practices and will lead and facilitate training for restorative practices to build social capital and achieve social discipline. The teacher will meet weekly with the site administration or district leadership to assess progress and to collaborate on planning actions and will collaborate with school site administration to develop alternative interventions which support students' behaviors and social or emotional needs. The teacher's duties also include assembling and conducting restorative circles with teachers, classes, counselors, parents, and administrators.

The No Place for Hate club activities will include conducting monthly meetings with stakeholders. The Anti-Defamation League certifies No Place for Hate status, and the teacher will submit three lessons or activities to the ADL for approval and will complete all necessary follow-up.

School site administration, district administration, and the teacher will collaborate on a Multi-Tiered System of Support manual which will explain the existing supports and interventions and will outline the policies and procedures for involvement by stakeholders who include students, parents, teachers, counselors, classified employees, and administrators.

A monthly report will be prepared for the school site and district administration and will include any information suitable for press releases.

The commitment to unconscious bias training will cost the school district approximately $54,000.
