Working cats are often people-shy; however, they make excellent hunters and pest controllers.

The San Diego County Department of Animal Services has recently taken in some cats who are shy or undersocialized to live with a family in a home environment. However, they are perfect to be adopted as working cats – cats that live inside a building/business and help get rid of pests.

Now, Animal Services wants to give these cats a second chance at a happy life by placing them with businesses or property owners that are willing to provide them with food and shelter, and longer-term vet care in exchange for organic pest control. Adoption fees are waived for these special kitties, and they will be fully vetted, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and ready to go.

Working cats often thrive in pairs, in places like barns, warehouses, churches and factories. Since they're a bit people-shy, they will mostly stay out of sight as long as they have a safe space to go to (but you'll notice far fewer rodents and other pests on your property).
