Free workshop to maximize college financial aid

Last updated 11/1/2012 at Noon

FALLBROOK – The cost of college continues to increase at a faster rate than general inflation, and many families experience sticker shock when they see the cost of one year of college. For example, the cost to a freshman living on campus at San Diego State University is over $26,000 for that first year of college. Likewise, University of San Diego shows over $51,000 for the same student. But families can find ways to lower their out-of-pocket expenses by planning properly, and by obtaining the maximum amount of financial aid that they qualify for.

While a number of sources exist for financial aid, it can be a confusing system to navigate. And with many misconceptions about college financial aid, the possibility exists that a family may pay thousands of dollars more than they need to during their student’s college years.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m., Ken Finster of Cyan Retirement Strategies will present a free college financial planning workshop in the community room at Fallbrook Library, 124 S. Mission Rd.

The workshop will cover how to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of college, how college selection affects costs, the truth about private vs. public colleges, financial aid sources, and how to improve financial aid qualification.

This free workshop is meant to educate families on the basic structure of the college financial aid world. Examples will be offered, and best practices discussed. In addition, college costs will be put in perspective relative to other family financial goals, such as retirement savings.

Additional workshop dates are scheduled for families that cannot make the Nov. 8 event. To reserve a seat, or for more information, call Ken Finster at (760) 501-0293 or email
