Park ranger visits Bonsall Elementary third graders

BONSALL – On May 29, Ranger Kyle Icke from Dos Picos County Park in Ramona visited third grade students at Bonsall Elementary to teach them about Native Americans in preparation for a field trip to Live Oak Park.

His Discovery Kit Program is funded by the county at no cost to the school. Part of the ranger-led activities included a study of the travels of early humans, and a directed drawing and demonstration of travel, food, clothing, and activities of Native Americans.

Finally, a hands-on experience for the students was to taste seeds eaten by local tribes, view and hold herbs and other items in nature’s medicines, and see/handle tools, games, and basket making materials used by the local tribes.

Ranger Icke led an exciting and entertaining session for all students in third grade, they were able to ask questions and get answers from a local expert.
