  • Best-selling novelist T. Jefferson Parker finds inspiration in Fallbrook

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

Being a writer is hard, especially when weaving together a story that involves real life crime with an enthralling story of fiction. It’s stories like these that leave readers feeling like they have bonded with the characters and instill the desire to want to know more. After penning bestsellers “Laguna Heat,” “Red Light,” “Silent Joe” and “LA Outlaws,” T. Jefferson Parker, a Fallbrook-based bestselling crime novelist whose writing career began in 1978 as a reporter, is fami...

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

A proposal to implement a parking prohibition on 275 feet of Winter Haven Road, east of Clearcrest Lane, drew a recommendation from the county’s Traffic Advisory Committee against such a parking ban, but the TAC’s Jan. 29 recommendation instead urged community residents and property owners to work together on a fence or other barrier to minimize impacts from Fallbrook Union High School District students using other students’ cars to hide unsanctioned activities. “It’s not a traffic safety issue,” said Eric Newbury, wh...

  • What other secrets are there?

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

Wikepedia (Internet) lists the number of USA centenarians (men/women who are 100 years of age or older) at 96,548 as of 11/01/2008 and by 2050, these numbers were forecasted to reach 834,000. Therefore, America’s present healthcare system must be the best in the world. So, why destroy it with Obamacare? At tea parties I attended, the majority of attendees were senior citizens (Republicans, Democrats and Independents) deeply concerned about possible Obamacare Senior Death panels which Sarah Palin and many others believe e...

  • A big thank you!

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

From time to time we get reminders of how many nice people there are all around us. Last Saturday my wife and I took a nasty fall -we are 88 and 86, and it’s easy to do- going to our car after dining at a restaurant. Luckily, neither of us was hurt seriously but this was not initially known. Immediately a man was there offering whatever help was needed and then others came. We were momentarily dazed and the assistance was very comforting. The restaurant called the paramedics and my wife was taken to the Rancho Springs e...

  • Interdistrict transfers not allowed

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

Readers may be interested to know that it is nearly impossible to get an interdistrict transfer. Anyone who plans to send their kids out of Fallbrook next year may want to start petitioning now. Our daughter is homeschooled through CAVA and we wanted to send her to Mission Vista which has a specialized track, but Fallbrook won’t allow the interdistrict transfer even though they will not benefit in anyway. She isn’t in the Fallbrook system, just attached to it by virtue of address. I’m a firm believer in parent’s rights...

  • Picking up trash on SR 76

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

I would like to say “well done” to the gentleman on SR 76 Westbound who had parked his truck on Monday, Jan. 25 at 11:30 a.m. and picked up trash. I honked my horn in recognition of his efforts. I am so afraid of the road dangers or I would have been out there with him. SR 76 is beginning to look really “trashy.” Thanks again! Peggy Scudder...

Hooray for the Hukilau, again! John Toma and his staff at Fallbrook Golf Club’s one-and-only Hawaiian restaurant pulled off another coup on Tuesday, January 26, when Hawaii’s top female vocalist Amy Hanaiali’i and a supporting cast of great musicians gave a special command performance to a packed house. Our Fallbrook golfing foursome felt very privileged to be front table dinner guests for this evening of wonderful food, entertainment and sharing of the warm “Aloha spirit.” We expected to see other familiar faces from Fallbro...

  • Healthcare overhaul failure due to apathy

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

Well, it certainly is beginning to look as if the “real” overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system will not now happen! The huge amount of money poured into the propaganda barrage by the pharmaceutical and other “for profit” organizations has won the day over the apathy of the general public. Unfortunately, we, the U.S. citizenry, have only ourselves to blame. Oh sure, it will happen eventually, but not now. The vast majority of us have been “bamboozled” once again. It saddens me because we had a real chance to pull it off and...

  • Healthcare is not constitutional

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

President Franklin Pierce, writing in an 1854 veto statement of a bill to authorize the giving away of federal lands for the creation of state-funded mental hospitals, penned a timeless warning against the unconstitutionality of federal involvement in healthcare: “I readily and, I trust, feelingly acknowledge the duty incumbent on us all as men and citizens, and as among the highest and holiest of our duties, to provide for those who, in the mysterious order of Providence, are subject to want and to disease of body of m...

At the time, he told his best friend Lazarus Berry about the dream. Both loved the concept and kept the idea tucked away in their minds unaware of how Gelgun would later resurface. Both men are now 35 years old. Rhodes, a Fallbrook resident and award-winning layout artist for several publications in San Diego and...
