    Updated May 17, 2007

FALLBROOK- Downtown Fallbrook has a splendid new garden look with the addition of 42 new potted plants, courtesy of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance. The showy pots contain handsome plants such as day lilies, heavenly bamboo, bird of paradise, nandina and cabbage palms from New Zealand. Garden designer Scott Spencer planted each pot with varieties specifically designed for the shaded street areas as well as those receiving harsher exposure. “It was challenging to find good looking, industrial strength plants that will l...

  • Oops! I made a mistake

    Updated May 17, 2007

Upon reading my President’s Message in the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce Newsletter section of the May 3rd paper, I discovered a huge error! By way of explanation, in the California horse racing business, our state regulatory arm is the California Horse Racing Board (“CHRB”). San Luis Rey Downs Thoroughbred Training Center in Bonsall is under the umbrella of the CHRB. We call them the “horse police”. They work well with our local Sheriff Department, our management staff and our horsemen. So, when I meant to comment on the fa...

  • Fallbrook Hospital provided great care

    Updated May 17, 2007

I was recently a patient in the ER and ICU at Fallbrook Hospital and I’m very grateful to all the dedicated nurses and doctors who helped me through a frightening experience. The ER team was very professional and gave excellent care (mixed in with a little humor, which was most appreciated). The nurses and staff in the ICU continued my care with expertise and compassion, and made me feel very comfortable. Jeanette Pettersen...

  • RE: 'Actress hasn't bought Bed and Breakfast'

    Updated May 17, 2007

Are you kidding? I’ve been on the reservation call back list since I first watched the show. Now I know why they haven’t called back to make our reservation. How disgusting! I’m turning their program off for good. Thanks for the information! Sharon Sopha Liverpool, NY...

The Fallbrook Rugby Clubs would like to thank the Fallbrook community for all of their support this season. Thanks to the parents who put in numerous hours making phone calls, carpooling, cooking and prepping the field, among many other things. Thanks to all of the fans who showed up to the matches, even if they didn’t know what a ruck or maul was. Thanks to Potter Junior High, which hosted those matches. Thanks to Sweet Leilani’s for donating the entree at the year-end banquet. Thanks to Coach Steve Hernandez, who put thi...

  • Hey kids, do the math

    Updated May 17, 2007

I know La Paloma students are good at math. So what do you get when you take seven rocks thrown with the intent to do damage and my house, which backs up to the playground? You get a broken window – not hit once but twice! I contacted the school, but, of course, how are we to know who did this? Hopefully, the person or persons will step forward and say they are sorry. I have always enjoyed hearing the happy noise of children playing, but after today I will also be sad to know that someone on the other side of the wall m...

  • Lorena Barraza greatly missed

    Updated May 17, 2007

I am very distressed to hear of Lorena Barraza’s sudden passing [Village News, Obituaries, 4/26/07]. My heart is broken for her dear family. This little girl (when I knew her), back when she and my son were in middle school together, had a cheery smile and a genuine kindness and goodness about her. She always said hello to me in the supermarket or at church. God bless her. She’s in Heaven watching over us, but how I wish she could have lived the life she was destined to live. My prayers and heartfelt sympathy to her mot...

  • Post office continues to mishandle mail

    Updated May 17, 2007

Once again I was in the (long) line at Fallbrook Post Office and observed another customer present one of the yellow cards (placed in post office boxes to indicate mail too large for the box is being held in the back room) to the clerk only to be told, after the clerk “checked” in the back room, “we can’t find anything.” The same thing happened to me, for the third time this year, the week before. This mail, containing bills, checks, and more, typically surfaces weeks or months later with no explanation. When are people go...

  • Signs of Armageddon on Wall Street

    Updated May 17, 2007

Am I the only one who sees Armageddon approaching Wall Street? The signs are pretty clear to me – foreclosures on the rise, and economic indicators the worst they’ve been since 2003! The serious loss of well-paid manufacturing jobs to overseas workers had had an obvious impact. This large segment of our population can no longer afford stable 30-year home loans, not on the minimum wage jobs they have been forced to accept as the US factories close one after another! As a result, they, and the already existing large pool of...

  • Accolades for Cinco de Mayo Festival

    Updated May 17, 2007

Patsy Loughboro, a member of the Fallbrook Democratic Club, had urged the Club to participate in the Cinco de Mayo festivities, emphasizing that the aims of the organizers meshed so well with the Club’s theme “Together, American can do better.” How right she was. I have seldom seen such togetherness as the organizers of this event displayed, with such energy and obvious enjoyment of their task. We were welcomed by Glen Zajic, who promised we would have a booth within 20 minutes. We did. After observing Glen’s energy, and his...

  • Some self examination is in order

    Updated May 17, 2007

Does Jon Monday really believe what he wrote in his letter of May 5th? Perhaps he does, based on the common liberal presumption that “If your opinions are different than mine you must be wrong.” John Bolton and Paul Wolfowitz are both highly qualified. It happens that their perspectives do not agree with liberal orthodoxy but that does not make them inept or wrong. As for the big brouhaha over Wolfowitz, he offered to recuse himself and was told that it was not necessary by those who are now so quick to have his head. See...

  • Generals finally speak out

    Updated May 17, 2007

This week eleven House Republicans met with President Bush to say that the politics of the Iraq War are no longer tenable. These were not the anti-war fringe Republicans but, until now, loyal to the White House position. They said the president is no longer credible about his predictions about the war and that it’s time to face facts. As a result, Bush uncharacteristically agreed to benchmarks, requiring positive actions by the Iraqi government, as part of the funding bill now in Congress. This is something Democrats have bee...

  • Community response needed to fire hazards

    Updated May 17, 2007

News reports continue to advise that 2007 has the worst fire danger potential in the past 90 years and the danger is already upon us due to early Santa Ana conditions. Fallbrook’s rating as one of the most dangerous fire areas, even in normal years, is a matter of record and this year, due to severe winter freeze burn and lack of rain, is anything but normal. One only has to drive along Mission Road, Sleeping Indian, De Luz and Santa Margarita to see entire rows of large, dead, and tinder dry trees and shrubs that are a b...
