    Updated May 17, 2007

Highlights of the 2006 college volleyball season for Heather Hughes included first-team all-conference recognition and her 1,000th career kill. “Overall it went pretty well,” Hughes said of her junior season with Loyola Marymount University. Not everything went well. The Lions were not invited to the NCAA playoffs after finishing with a 6-8 West Coast Conference record and a 19-12 overall record which followed an 11-3 start. The sixth-place conference finish was the worst in Steve Stratos’ 17 years as Loyola Marym...

    Updated May 17, 2007

Fallbrook High School graduate Matt Chico made his first major league appearance in San Diego May 2 when the Washington Nationals played the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Chico was the losing pitcher in the Nationals’ 7-3 loss to the Padres. Chico started the game for the Nationals and allowed five of the Padres’ runs, all in the fourth inning. “Three walks in the fourth inning killed me,” Chico said. “Once I got a couple of runners on base, I was trying a little too hard to throw strikes.” Chico graduated from Fallbrook H...

  • Tipped barrel keeps Southard from Lakeside win

    Updated May 17, 2007

Had it not been for a five-second penalty for knocking down a barrel, Temecula’s Melanie Southard would have won the Barrel Racing at the Lakeside Rodeo. Southard and her horse, Snickers, completed the course in 17.09 seconds during the April 29 performance, but the tipped barrel gave her an official time of 22.09 seconds. Rachel Millymaki, who also rode April 29, had a time of 17.20 seconds to win the rodeo. “I knew he was having a good run, so it’s kind of disappointing, but I’m not upset or mad at him,” Southard said. Sni...

  • Hardwired for God

    Updated May 17, 2007

Although I’ve always believed in God, my spiritual journey began as I watched my husband, Terry, draw his last breath. After seven days in intensive care, he took on an ashen color I can only describe as ghastly. Early that Saturday morning, I frantically circled his bed, rubbing his feet and hands, trying to recover circulation in his darkened limbs. Suddenly, alarms rang, and I was shoved out of the room as a medical team began to resuscitate him. I looked up into the neon lights and prayed a desperate prayer. “Lord, if...

In a recent presentation to the Fallbrook Ministerial Association, Chuck Boatman, Professor of Biblical Studies at Hope International University in Fullerton, California, stated that on any given Sunday, “There are more people in church on Sunday in communist China than in all of Western Europe.” I can even see how they could reach that conclusion when refer...
