  • My water savings evaporated at FPUD

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

In 2009 FPUD requested ratepayers to conserve water. FPUD called it the Category One advisory mode of operation with the exception that grove farmers lost their preferred water rate. Then, because of drought conditions, FPUD went into a Category Two mode of operation and for ratepayers with large lots the water cost increase was extreme. Ratepayers were given a target usage amount each month based on previous year’s usage which they were told not to exceed. If ratepayers kept the amount of their water usage below the t...

  • Music in Bonsall sponsored by great groups

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

As we gear-up for another school year on behalf of the Sullivan Middle School music in Bonsall, I would like to thank the many organizations and people that continue to make a difference for our students. First, let me recognize the Bonsall Educational Foundation. Their fundraising efforts are so tremendous that they can support programs, instrument repairs and curriculum purchases for music education in all Bonsall schools. Last June was amazing, with the second annual Bonsallpalooza benefit concert held at Pala Casino. In...

  • Thanks to Walgreens and others

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

The Fallbrook Alumni Association would like to give a very hardy “Thank You” to our local Walgreens for their wonderful support for our annual Backpack Buddy Project. Store Manager, Chris Jenkins, and his assistant, Kristopher, were extremely helpful in procuring 75 backpacks and all the necessary supplies to fill them. Because of the store’s generosity, we were able to fill a very real need for some Fallbrook High School students who would otherwise be financially unable to start school with all the necessary supplies to hav...

  • Can you volunteer to help a boy whose parent is deployed?

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

I would like to invite men who would like to have a patriotic experience to join me. I was recently named a Big Brother. I will meet with my “little brother” once a week during the coming school year for one hour at his school. No set agenda; just spending time with a youngster while his parent is deployed. Scheduling is flexible and the meeting place is one of the schools on Camp Pendleton. Call (619) 218-3532 now so they can process your application before school starts. Joe Bator...

  • Six lanes in lieu of four for SR76's final link

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

The front page article of the Aug. 5 Village News quotes Caltrans as projecting an additional $100M if the Southern Route were to be implemented for SR76’s final link. If accepted at face value, that may be the case pending final cost estimates of the North versus South routes. However, what is overlooked is that by implementing the Southern Route, our community would gain six lanes instead of four. By retaining two lane SR76 route as a frontage road and building out the four-lane Southern Alternative, Caltrans would gain s...

  • What good are North County Fire's notices?

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

So here we are - another fire season approaches. I do read the notices sent out by North County Fire Protection District. They ‘say’ they need our help. Great; I’m good with that. I have called regarding palm trees that are at a corner of my property that seriously need to be trimmed. Two of my surrounding neighbors have just spent lots of dollars improving their fencing which bypasses these trees. I was told by North County Fire that they cannot force people to trim their trees. Hmm. Then heavens, why send out the notic...

  • New resident thanks neighbors

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

As a new Fallbrook resident, I’d like to thank some of the first people I met here. First, there was the neighbor who loaned me tools when I was trying to put in a new mailbox with a plumbers wrench and a gardening trowel. As it turned out, I didn’t even need them because while I was gone, apparently the mailbox fairies came! And they were packin’ heat (tools). Mailbox was attached, poled and cemented. Thanks, guys. The other night, my foster dog got out of the yard. Unfortunately it was after 1 a.m., so driving around yelli...

  • Pop Warner thanks Fallbrook

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

Fallbrook Pop Warner’s Family Fun Day at Live Oak Park on August 14 was a great success. Each team had their own game booth to raise money for the year. The teams did a great job on creativity and themes. They had everything from a jail to selling root beer floats. The kids also voted to make one of the coaches eat goldfish. Teammates were putting their friends in jail and the cheer teams would bail them out. We would like to give a special thanks to the following for their donations: Northgate, Daniels Market, Albertsons, a...

  • There is already a mosque there

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

I can’t help but feel sorry that our political process has been taken over by the extremists. Case in point is the proposed new Islamic center in NYC within a few blocks of “Ground Zero.” It appears that my party, the GOP, is determined to make political capital out of this, irrespective of the real truth of the matter. Firstly, there’s already a functioning mosque in the existing building, but my party doesn’t want to acknowledge that fact, spoils their overriding ‘slant’ on the matter. I’d be the first to admit, given th...

  • Re: 'American pride gone awry' [Letter, Village News, 8-19-10]

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

Americans by majority are against slavery as our nation fought a civil war to obliterate slavery of early Americans who, at a woeful time actually owned slaves. That is a piece of American history we are not proud of. Tim Orsino appears wildly in favor of giving all the advantages of free everything, open border, full health benefits, and thank them for sneaking in. Baloney! Tim asserts that illegals pay state and federal income tax. Wrong again; no driver license; not even a green card; those fees are not paid. Does Tim...

  • Only a dope goes on dope

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

A few years ago, I needed a job. I went down to San Diego to that government building where they had jobs on the wall. They had a job in Santee as a maintenance person. I went to Santee. It was a house for the mentally ill. I saw this caretaker person who talked to me and invited me for a walk through. The residents were all young males under 25 years old, all mental cases from some form of dope the caretaker said. I could not believe it. That could be you next if you are on dope. John S. Cardona...

  • The history of Pendleton stretches centuries before World War II

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

Names such as Tarawa and Lejeune are seen on street signs or in housing areas throughout Marine Corps’ Installations, but some may wonder where Camp Pendleton’s unfamiliar camp names originated. When explorers discovered modern-day Camp Pendleton, it was common for Catholic missionaries to name points of arrival or rest stops for the patron saint whose holy day coincides with time they arrived. A majority of Camp Pendleton locations can be traced to these Spanish padres and...

  • Michaels, Springfield perform at Pala

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

A pair of inspirations performed in concert July 31 at the Pala Casino’s Starlight Theater. Bret Michaels, who was diagnosed with diabetes when he was six, has become an inspiration to juvenile diabetics and their families. He was followed by Rick Springfield, who during his acting career backed up the legendary Lorne Greene in Battlestar Galactica before becoming a headline act as a singer. Officially Michaels and Springfield were double headliners at Pala. Springfield was scheduled initially, and when Michaels became a...
