  • Maui - An umbrella of tropical relaxation

Nathalie Taylor, Special to the Village News|Updated Feb 27, 2019

As I sat on Maui’s Ka’anapali Beach the sand felt soft and velvety. The beach air was filled with the chatter and flutter of exotic birds, and one with yellow-rimmed eyes and a yellow beak was particularly beautiful. The absence of the cry of gulls reminded me that I was far away from home because seagulls aren’t found in Hawaii. The Ka’anapali Beach Hotel (KBH), was my home while on Maui, however, I was initially considering the Sheraton because it is situated on the best snorkeling beach. But, I opted for KBH because it is...

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

Don Bryant of Fallbrook announces the formation of a new men’s club. Membership is aimed at those concerned with the out-of-control national debt, outsourcing of American jobs, importing of cheap foreign labor, trade deficits, illegal immigration, failing education and the financial squeeze on the middle class. The club will be nonpartisan, nonprofit and nondenominational. The format will be one of informal discussion, opinion and debate with a goal toward solutions for the general welfare of the nation. Bryant is a r...

  • Walk/Run to Feed the Hungry a great success!

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

Thank you to the many people who walked or ran in the Thanksgiving Walk/Run to Feed the Hungry on Saturday, November 18. We had a very good turnout, with an exciting number of high school and junior high school students coming out for the event, thanks in part to the efforts of Josh Way and Megan McGurk at the high school and the youth leaders of many of our local churches. We had families and individuals of all ages. Some brought their dogs along, too! We were especially happy to have the support of Honorary Mayor Rhonda...

  • A discouraging loss

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

In the hurry and excitement of everything that has been going on downtown Rhonda Reinke lost something precious to her: a tennis bracelet given to her on her anniversary by her husband, Claude. It saddens me to see her lose something so precious to her while she has done so much for Fallbrook. She’s pretty sure she lost it Wednesday, probably on Main Avenue while she was preparing and carrying things to get ready for the holiday festivities in the Square. She’s been so busy that it is just now being reported as lost and we...

  • Addictive cigarettes can kill

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

I recently discovered that Reynolds [Tobacco Company] has 1.4 percent of the holdings in an income fund in which I have a small investment. I don’t want even my small investment to help produce and advertise cigarettes. Scientific medical opinion is that disease caused by smoking is preventable, yet tobacco companies still advertise cigarettes to the young, healthy and gullible. Supporters of California Proposition #86, which would increase the cigarette tax, claim that the American Cancer Society and the American Lung A...

  • Republicans deserved their 'comeuppance'

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

As a longtime Republican stalwart, I am celebrating the “comeuppance” which we gained on November 7! We deserved it! Now perhaps we can regroup and accept that our party has been taken over by the “extreme right” whose only concern is the “bottom line.” We now have a chance to return to GOP principles of smaller government, pay-as-you-go and support of John Citizen. Far right evangelicals and corporate greed have ruined our party – let’s change that! Never again should our party be trying to change the outside world – we’ve g...

  • Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary still needs help

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

We are writing this in hopes that someone can help us. Since 2002 the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary has taken in, housed, rehabilitated and re-homed over 500 animals. This is a much-needed organization. Fallbrook and Bonsall do not have any animal shelters. The surrounding animal shelters are not able to help this area most of the time. There are numerous animals that need our help and deserve a second chance, and the people of our community deserve the service we provide as well. Even though we rented our present location with...

  • RE: 'Curnow earns first degree black belt'

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

Mrs. Eyerman is such a great instructor. She devotes all her attention to her students in performing well and instills in them what tae kwon do really means. There is no one better to teach tae kwon do. Nancy Sebastian Santa Barbara, CA...

  • Smiles!

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

That’s what Mike and Ann Popovich have provided for many children by donating a portion of Ann’s prize teddy bear collection. In addition, the Popoviches have invited five Marines to their home to share Thanksgiving dinner with them. There’s more! They have also adopted a needy family for Christmas. Now that’s what we call giving! Tess Hansford and Abby Elston Co-chairmen, Toys for Tots...

  • Poker players are angry

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

During the month of October the Senate passed the Port Security Act, with a bill attached to it by Senator Bill Frist. This attachment concerned an online gambling bill that prohibits banks and credit card companies from using their services to fund gambling accounts. I am, as are many other thousands and thousands of online poker players, very angry at the deceitful manner in which this bill was handled. I am a member of the Poker Players Alliance (150,000 members and growing). Our goal is to seek legislation that will...

  • Voight versus Walson: First Amendment Issue

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

To respond to the large number of inquiries of local residents as to the outcome of the litigation involving Monty Voight and Sheila Walson, I believe that the following will answer the questions and concerns they may have. The initial litigation revolves around the Letter to the Editor of the Village News, sent by Sheila Walson and published on February 16, 2006. That letter can be viewed on the newspaper’s Web site. In that letter, among other items and allegations, Sheila made two accusations directed at Monty Voight. S...

  • No secrets at this CIA: Delicious "One Dish Meals" the latest from premier culinary college

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

The CIA cooks know is the Culinary Institute of America headquartered in Hyde Park, NY, with auxiliary campus in the Sonoma Valley. At one time it seemed entirely focused on educating chefs for the institutional world of fine restaurants and hotels. Today that edge has been softened as the food world of home cooks and chefs blend. Perhaps no more evidence is needed than the array of cookbooks produced by the CIA for the use and good pleasure of home cooks. One of the most recent books is “One Dish Meals” (Lebhar-Friedman Boo...

  • Supes look to upgrade 'Reverse 9-1-1' system

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

In March 2005 the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved the solicitation of proposals for a community emergency notification system, sometimes known as “Reverse 9-1-1.” On November 14, 2006, the supervisors voted 5-0 to issue a solicitation for an upgraded system. “We’re continuing to see new technologies emerging each day,” said Supervisor Greg Cox. Reverse 9-1-1 is considered valuable and cost-effective but has vulnerabilities, most notably the fact that calling home phones through traditional phone lines omi...

  • County approves vacation of Hollyhill Road portion

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

The County of San Diego has vacated the public portion of Hollyhill Road in Bonsall. A 5-0 Board of Supervisors vote November 15 approved the resolution to vacate the public road interest, which will allow the adjacent property owners to utilize the property and provide better security. The property owners along the private portion of Hollyhill Road had requested the vacation of the public portion, which is an abandoned portion of Old Gopher Canyon Road. When Gopher Canyon Road was realigned, the remaining segment became a...

  • Shoppers urged to check reciepts

    Updated Dec 1, 2006

With the holiday shopping season upon us once again, it is important for consumers to be aware of the prices they are being charged at the cash register. Automated price scanning mistakes have cost San Diego County consumers over $87 million so far this year. “During this busy time of year where people are spending extra money in shops, it’s easy to overlook pricing errors,” said Robert Atkins, County Sealer of Weights and Measures. “We want to make sure consumers are treated fairly.” According to Atkins, consumers are entit...
