Students enjoy bicycle day

FALLBROOK — On a recent Wednesday, 120 Maie Ellis first grade students donned their bicycle helmets; checked their bikes, tires, and brakes; and participated in the First Grade Bicycle Day. Students learned about “Things That Go” through their reading program and language arts lessons, and for the past ten days they have been learning about “Bicycle Safety” during social studies and English Language Development times. First graders learned about parts of a bicycle and the equipment needed for a safe ride. They also worked on rules of the road, including proper hand signals.

As a culminating activity, the first grade teachers at Maie Ellis invited the students to bring their bicycles to school for the premier, soon-to-be-annual, First Grade Bicycle Day. Notices went home giving parents an opportunity to help their children ready their bikes, identify them with personal information, and make sure the helmets fit. The teachers prepared a course at Maie Ellis, and those students who did not have bicycles were paired with children who did. At 12:45, a mass of little bike riders were assembled, teachers with stop signs were strategically placed along the route, and rules of the course were reviewed. Suddenly, every thing was in place, and ready to go! Approximately 60 bikers were on the course at one time…using good judgment about speed and passing, obeying stop signs, and having a really great time. A couple of flat tires, one broken chain, and some minor falls added to the reality of being a bike rider.

At 1:30, the course was closed, and group photos were taken. Teachers participating were Cindy Greer, Fran Max, Denise Leonard, Jill Butler, Lilly Perez, and Gus Fetty. Several parents watched, and PTA President Lynette Gomez and FUHS Teacher Cadet Jennifer Becerra manned two of the stop signs. Lisa Comerford, PTA Board Member, helped with sizing helmets. Everyone had a great, great time!
