Women's History Month award winners

FALLBROOK — In honor of Women’s History Month, eighth grade students in Janis Fountain’s American History classes at Potter Jr. High took part in a writing contest titled “Amazing American Women.” Nearly 200 students did research and wrote two- to three-page essays on American women from the past and present. The writing contest was sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators. The top four award winners were chosen by a committee from Delta Kappa Gamma. On March 17, the top awards were announced. In first place was Josiah Marroquin, who wrote an inspiring essay about Harriet Tubman. Second place went to Tessa Patti, who chose to write about Helen Keller. In third place was Evan Heath, who chose Susan B. Anthony, and in fourth place was Chelsea Conklin, whose heroine was Elizabeth Blackwell. All of the top winners were treated to a gift certificate to purchase books of their choice.
