Life drawing class trains the eye

“Anyone who enjoys art benefits from life drawing because it trains the eye like nothing else can,” said local artist Neill Ketchum. “The mind is given a rigorous, intense workout — it’s like the ‘Pilates’ of art.”

Life drawing sessions are offered at the Art Studios/School of Art once a month, on the fourth Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Professional models, both male and female, are provided by the Whidden Agency. The facility is well lit.

Artists, who work in various mediums such as charcoal and watercolor, bring their own supplies. A small fee is charged for the class sessions.

Ketchum noted that the group is having a difficult time keeping the “study alive” and is surprised because “in Escondido there is standing room only.”

“I can see my drawing improve,” said Ketchum, “and there is nothing like drawing the human form in 3-D — it’s so much better than copying a photograph.”

The Art Studios/School of Art is located at 310 East Alvarado. The telephone number is (760) 728-6383. For further information interested artists may also contact Neill Ketchum at [email protected].
