FHS academic teams win North County division

On Tuesday, April 24, the Fallbrook High School freshman and junior varsity academic decathlon teams participated in the San Diego County championships. Both teams were awarded medals for winning the North County division and ending the winning streak of Rancho Buena Vista High School from the past few years. Even though the teams did not win the county championship, they did great.

The freshman team was made up of the following members: Preston Beye, Tommy Bunts, Edward Casey, Wade Colburn, Dominic Dawkins, Matt Day, Jessi DiGiacomo, Joe Edwards, Tim May and Ross Newman. The team was coached by Lisa Tagle-Nava and assistant coach was David Thuleen. At the championships, they competed against Canyon Crest Academy. The other teams competing were Torrey Pines and Westview. The Warriors nearly beat Canyon Crest but were defeated in the last 20 seconds.

The JV team also had an outstanding season. Connie Fellios served as coach and Dave Thuleen as assistant coach. The team consisted of the following members: Ben Bancroft, Patty Benitez, Sydnee Caldwell, Matt Chester, Madison Donaghue, Maureen Elinzano, Lauren Jackson, Carrie Jercinovich, Jeffrey Kelly, Derek Majewski, Maggie Maratsos, Maggie Rose Moore, Roxanne Parker, Tess Smidt and Jeremiah Zamora. The JV faced off against San Dieguito Academy, who defeated the Warriors in a high-scoring match.

Overall, both teams represented North County well and put Fallbrook in the spotlight!
