Toddler struck by car on Alvarado Street

A two-year old toddler was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Alvarado Street just east of Potter Street, on Saturday, September 20, at about 6:20 p.m.

Officer Steven Zelasco of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), said a two-year-old male ran off of a sidewalk, between two parked cars, and into the street and direct path of a 2002 GMC Yukon driven by 38-year old Maria Alegria.

“The driver was traveling at only 20 to 30 miles per hour and hit her brakes immediately when she saw the child dart out into the street but could not stop in time,” Zelasco said.

The child, who sustained what officers classified as “moderate” injuries to the head, was taken by family members in a private vehicle to Fallbrook Hospital.

Zelasco said, based on the information contained in the report made by officers at the scene, it appears the incident was “unavoidable” on the driver’s part.
