Beach volleyball serves up competition for Pendleton service members

Volleyballs were flying and sand was splashing during Camp Pendleton’s 2010 two and four person Beach Volleyball Tournament at Camp Del Mar’s beach, Aug. 4.

The Marine Corps Community Services sponsored Pendleton Cup Series provides active duty personnel, regardless of skill or experience, an opportunity to take part in a variety of competitive unit sports while competing for monetary prizes to be given to their respective unit’s funds.

The match started at 7:30 a.m. with music and a display of trophies to motivate the eager contestants.

The tournament was divided up into three divisions; four-person men’s, two-person men’s, and two-person women’s. The winner of four-person men’s was Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s “You got customer-served” team. The winner of two-person men’s was 3rd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 1st Marine Division’s “Gators” team. The two-person women’s winner was Assault Craft Unit-5’s “Lady Swift Intruders” team.

“I have a lot of fun playing volleyball with the Marines I work with,” said Lance Cpl. Scott Roberson, personnel clerk, Headquarters and Support Battalion, MCB Camp Pendleton. “Work can get monotonous, but taking a break like this really improves the morale of our section.”

The event featured a mix of participants who also play either on a base intramural team or varsity team and was organized by MCCS sports coordinators.

“We do it for the Marines,” said Eddie F. Bolanos, sports coordinator, MCCS. “They work hard, and they deserve to play hard.”

Bolanos made it known that it is not too late to sign up for remaining Pendleton Cup events.

“The more participation from base units, the better,” said Bolanos.
