FUESD parents, teachers honored for efforts

FALLBROOK – June 2 was a special day for several parents and teachers as they were honored for their work in advancing the academic progress of English Language Learners (ELL). The ceremony was held at William H. Frazier elementary school. Parent Victor Murillo was selected for the top honor amidst many hard-working parents and educators who were nominated for the award from Live Oak School.

Murillo began to volunteer when his children started school. With his primary language being Spanish, Murillo participated in the Parent Institute and the Parent Literacy program which helped him understand more fully his role as his children’s “first teacher.” Murillo has learned a great deal of English in his years as a parent volunteer. He and his wife, Hersilia, are guest readers and serve on the committee every year for Fallbrook A Leer/Reading Family Literacy Day.

This past fall, Murillo was elected president of the English Language Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), which provides input as to the direction the school’s services for English Language Learners should take. English Language Learners include all students who come to school with a primary language other than English. There have been Russian-, Czech-, Mandarin-, Tagalog- and Spanish-speaking children as ELL students at Live Oak and other schools in the district.

The school community expressed its appreciation of Victor Murillo and all the others honored for their hard work and dedication which they said, “leads to the success of Fallbrook’s students.”
