REINS gets new shade covers for horses, volunteers

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook’s therapeutic horsemanship program, REINS (Riding Emphasizing Individual Needs and Strengths) was in much need of a shaded workspace in which to tack horses in preparation for some 30 daily lessons. The existing cross ties were refurbished, thanks to the Eagle Scout project led by Jerry Gambrell of Camp Pendleton’s Boy Scout Troop 789. The cross ties area provides relief from the sun for not only the horses, but also for the 300 volunteers who work there each week.

The project consisted of removal of the existing worn and shredded cover, as well as rotted wood beams. Gambrell, with the support of 20 of his fellow scouts, installed new wood beams and replaced the shading with new mesh. The whole area got a coat of fresh paint and was completed one hour ahead of schedule. Debbie Shinner, REINS’ executive director, was thrilled with the project and is grateful to have it completed before the summer heat.

Gambrell raised $600, through car washes on Camp Pendleton, to purchase materials for the project. He also had the support of local businesses. L&M Fertilizer, Joe’s Hardware and Home Depot provided discounts on materials used for the project.

REINS provides over 185 therapeutic riding lessons per week and since they are non-profit, projects such as Gambrell’s are always welcome. In fact, REINS, located on South Mission Road, encourages Eagle Scout candidates to stop by and view the Eagle Board for project availability.
