African-inspired fiber art topic of lecture, workshop

FALLBROOK – Fiber artist Leora Raikin will present a lecture on Sept. 1 and a workshop on Sept. 3 relating to African-inspired fiber art in conjunction with the Fallbrook Quilt Guild at the Fallbrook Community Center.

Raikin, a South African native and California resident, authored “Safari Through African Folklore Embroidery” and has been teaching and lecturing about her native country for the last decade. She will display her own creations and those of her students.

Raikin’s work is in true Ndebele tradition, tribal art passed down from mother to daughter. She weaves in stories and the ancient traditions of Africa into her lectures and workshops.

The Quilt Guild meeting featuring Raikin will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 1.

The workshop will include kit designs that can be purchased and training will be provided on stitching and embellishment techniques. To sign up for the workshop, call Dixie Johns at (760) 451-0644.
