Zion awards scholarship recipient

FALLBROOK – Zion Lutheran School is pleased to announce that it has awarded one of its eighth grade students, Matthew Norwood, the Timothy N. Timm Merit Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. Matthew was selected after a rigorous application process from a group of six very worthy applicants.

The scholarship was created in loving memory of Timm, a long-time Zion Lutheran School principal and outstanding mathematics teacher. Additionally, after he retired as principal, Timm facilitated the building of the Zion Fellowship Center. In honor of his service to his Lord Jesus Christ, for his many years of service both at Zion and in other Lutheran schools, and particularly in honor of his service to Zion, his family created this scholarship to benefit exemplary Zion Lutheran School students.

The scholarship criteria include excellence in academic achievement in mathematics, student essays, and letters of recommendation from the student’s Pastor and two teachers. The scholarship includes full tuition to a deserving student.

Throughout his academic career at Zion, Matthew has consistently earned high marks in mathematics, Timm’s favored subject. Most importantly, he is a humble young man who exemplifies Christian character to his peers and the younger students. He is a confirmed member of Zion Lutheran Church.

In his own words, Matthew said, “I have great peace knowing God is always with me, and I work every day at obeying his Word.” He is a leader in his class, an excellent student, and even has had perfect attendance since he was in Kindergarten.

Matthew and his family were recognized during worship service on Aug. 28 and at the first school chapel on Monday, Aug. 29.
