Vallecitos honors Student of the Month recipients

The Vallecitos School District, whose only school is Vallecitos Elementary School, held its Student of the Month ceremony March 24.

The drive-thru ceremony recognized preschool students Breseida Leon and Anthony Sanchez, kindergarten students Leslie Bernardino, Victoria McLaughlin and Kylee Murphy, first graders Emelyn Bernardino, Sergio Garcia and Belinda Jimenez Sotelo, second graders Alexsa Alegria, Luis Leon, Jason Ortiz and Lily Sims, third grader Andre McLaughlin, fourth graders Jayden Castellanos and Nataly Ordonez, fifth graders Alonso Duran and Silvestre Hernandez Jr., sixth grader Isabel Chavez Covarrubias, seventh graders Marley Goode and Reiley Villegas and eighth grader Joseline Gonzalez.

"We had a lot of students with different cars decorated, which was nice," Maritza Koeppen, principal of Vallecitos Elementary School and superintendent of Vallecitos School District, said.

The March 24 ceremony which honored the Student of the Month recipients for February 2021 was the first such ceremony since daylight saving time went into effect for the year.

"It was nice that it was sunny," Koeppen said. "The weather was nice. We had, I think, more participation today. The kids were excited."

Students from the Vallecitos Elementary School after-school program watched the ceremony.

"The kids came out and cheered on the other students," Koeppen said.

Each car transporting an honored student stopped temporarily for the presentation of the certificate and a photo opportunity.

"They get to take a picture," Koeppen said. "They get to take a book."

The books available to the Student of the Month recipients were donated. Each honored student selected a book.

School custodian Miguel Ortiz participated as a disc jockey and prepared a playlist for the student recognition activity.

"We also had music, so that was fun," Koeppen said.

Each teacher selects one or two students for the Student of the Month honors.

"It's fun celebrating our student achievements, and we look forward to continuing celebrating our students," Koeppen said.
