  • Fire involves five acres

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

A brush fire, ignited by a vehicle fire, consumed approximately five acres in the vicinity of Sky Ranch and De Luz Murrieta roads on Thursday afternoon, April 17. CAL FIRE San Diego crews responded to the incident, although it took place on property just across the Riverside County line. “There was a threat to a structure for a little while but no structures were damaged or destroyed,” reported Darrin Howell, a fire captain for CAL FIRE. The fire traveled up drainage areas between avocado groves. It began at app...

  • Guest Editorial - 'Cash 4 Grades' can bring discipline, civility

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

This is an open letter to the community of Fallbrook, describing a proposed program that would bring increased discipline and civility to our pleasant, friendly town. Crime has multiplied in the past few years in our community. You may have noticed an increase in graffiti, vandalism and other illegal behavior reported in the papers. The root of much of this activity is centered in the mobile home park on South Alturas Road, where Mentoring Associates, Inc. is located, so we have been able to see this epidemic grow. It is a...

  • The pursuit of truth requires information

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

Progressive nations of the world have begun to accept the notion that personal choices are best left to the person rather than being legislated, based on someone else’s subjective opinion of truth. See if you can identify this personal behavior – by the ‘objective’ evidence: 1. It causes serious damage to body tissues unsuited for the practice. 2. It puts practitioners at a high risk of contracting a deadly disease 3. “It diverts billions of dollars in public and private funds for medical research and care that could ben...

  • Thanks, Chad!

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

I’d like to thank “Chad,” who stopped to call AAA for me when my car died on Mission near Big Oak Ranch a couple of Fridays ago. He even called my workplace after he’d left me to wait for the tow. Another example of what’s good about this town! Thanks again. Cheryl Prall...

  • Time Warner being greedy

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

Since the October 2007 mandatory evacuations for the Rice Canyon Fire, we had no Time Warner Internet service for over two weeks. Our area was hard hit, with several homes on Daisy Lane being totally destroyed. Consequently, we deducted $25 from our monthly bill of $49.99 with a note of explanation. Time Warner has demanded full payment. Today, we received a notice saying Time Warner was going to disconnect our service because of the $25 due. Time Warner is a giant in the industry and costs much more than ATT (which is not...

  • Thrift store practices unsightly

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

I respect the effort and good intentions behind the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store operated by the Catholic church here in town, but the practice they have developed of putting large amounts of used furniture, exercise equipment, office supplies and more outside the front of their store in the parking/driveway area, right alongside Main Avenue, is awful. This creates a poor image as one travels through our town. It gives the impression of a daily “yard sale” and downgrades other businesses along the street. Some days the...

  • Stand with us against the quarry

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

We need you to stand up with us and be part of a “living sign.” Will you support our communities in saying, “No Quarry” and send our politicians a clear message that the people want to be heard? Then, show up and help stop an open pit mine from turning this area into an industrial area. Help preserve our “quality of life.” Bring your family, your friends, your neighbors. Event will be held Sunday, May 4, 1:30 p.m. at Patricia H. Birdsall Sports Park, corner of Pechanga Pkwy and Deer Hollow, across from Great Oak High School...

  • If we just focus on the good, the bad will not go away

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

If you read the North County Times, then you are aware of the shooting that took place on April 11 in front of Carl’s Jr. on Ammunition Road. One that you did not hear about was a shooting that took place the very next night in a neighborhood just south of there at about the same time in the evening. Related? Drugs, prostitution, pimping, human trafficking and gang violence are all here in our quiet little Avocado Festival-ing town. Can you say Neighborhood Watch? If you don’t believe what I am telling you then go look it...

  • We want unsanitized news

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

Thank you, Village News, for wonderful coverage of Fallbrook. The Sheriff’s Log is my favorite section. Crime is a part of this town. Over the last year, a heavy crime wave has washed over our citizens. We deeply appreciate your coverage of it and plead for more. The April 17 issue of the Village News offers no mention of the shooting that took place in front of Carl’s Jr. on Friday, April 11, at approximately 6 p.m. The shooting victim was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the...

  • RE: 'The pursuit of truth requires courage' [Opinion, 4/17/08]

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

I find myself in the unlikely position of agreeing with Margot Holman. I only wonder why Margot didn’t name the scourge that has swept our nation: obesity. I applaud Margot’s courage in taking a stand against overeating and its inevitable results. As Margot pointed out in her letter, the objective evidence is that it causes serious damage to our bodies, puts the practitioners at high risk for multiple deadly diseases, diverts hundreds of billions of dollars in public and private funds for medical research and care that cou...

  • Please help me find my car

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

She is 34 years old and her name is ‘Snow White.’ She is a 1974 Chevrolet Nova SS, limited edition. I purchased her off the showroom floor of a Chevrolet dealer in Santa Ana, CA, in February of 1974 for $4,400. California license plate is NOVA74. She is white with black racing stripes on the hood and truck lid and has Nova SS decals on both front quarter panels. She is a two-door model with black interior and bucket seats. Over the years, I added chrome rims, a stereo system, tinted windows and a lot of wax. During the fir...

  • De Luz oversight issue discussed further

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

Fears over bringing a swath of De Luz under the wing of the Fallbrook Community Planning Group seemed to fade at a packed-house meeting Monday night, April 21. The hour-long information session, which was prefaced by a sharply-worded letter from a De Luz community leader, ended with a show of hands from audience members who seemed largely in favor of the concept. Even Mike Manchor, chief of the volunteer De Luz Fire Department, at the end said he recognized the value of joining forces with the 15-member elected panel that...

  • Culinary events a highlight of Avocado Festival

    Updated Apr 24, 2008

The flavor of the day was definitely avocado. It came in the form of guacamole, egg rolls, sushi, salads, pies, cupcakes, milkshakes, truffles and more. Nothing was too exotic for the imaginative cooks, chefs and bakers who participated in the culinary events at the 22nd Annual Avocado Festival held Sunday, April 20, in downtown Fallbrook. On hand to sample some of the fare and to act as a culinary contest judge was Carol Eastman, wearing a pink jacket embroidered with...

The group was comprised of about 21 members and 24 missionaries, including some from San Clemente, Vista and Escondido stakes. In total they put in about 315 hours of labor. They are still working on the volunteer projects that they agreed to complete in the days following the Rice Canyon Fire last October. The latest project to b...
