  • Combating the fear monster

    Updated May 9, 2008

Last Saturday after my Contemplative Prayer meeting, I spent time with a friend discussing her fears. She battles anxious thoughts that intensify as she goes to sleep and mock her with the rising sun. Her mind is continually troubled with dark ruminations that nearly swallow her up, destroying her peace and ruining most of her day. Her fear monster has ruled the roost way too long. Fear is good if it protects us from something harmful, but if it keeps us from living a full life, we have to dig our heels in and proclaim our ri...

  • Can God really forgive me?

    Updated May 9, 2008

Once a month I have been visiting the San Diego County Jail in Vista, and just recently I have begun going to the Riverside County Fire Honor Camp in Rainbow with a group of our parishioners. I go to these places once a month, but other dedicated lay people are there every week. Almost always I am working with the women inmates at both facilities. At either place, we usually get to enter at about 7 p.m. and begin our service at about 7:30 p.m. Normally, we don’t get out and home until close to 10 p.m. On most nights I have ap...

  • What "Class A baseball" means

    Updated May 9, 2008

The hardest part about explaining Class A minor league baseball is doing so without plagiarizing the work of the late Vern Luse, who compiled an authoritative history of minor league classifications. A few changes have occurred since Vern’s death in 1989, so hopefully the Luse family will forgive me as I add some details about the Lake Elsinore Storm’s status in professional baseball. Vern’s work noted the creation of the original minor league classifications: A, B, C, and D. The classifications were based on the combi...
