    Updated May 20, 2010

The decision to not rehire seven certificated employees in the Fallbrook Union High School District (FUHSD) and the reduction of hours for a designated classified position was the most recent result of the high school district’s need to cut back spending for the 2010-2011 academic year. Since the board of trustees had approved a budget reduction of $1,822,675 on March 2, at their May 10 meeting they implemented those reductions by deciding not to rehire the seven certificated employees. The district’s staff carried out the...

  • Judicial candidates

    Updated May 20, 2010

I am increasingly aware of how important our judges are. I’ve found that as a public service to the community the non-partisan San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) has rated the judicial candidates for the June 8 primary election. According to SDCBA, the judicial candidates are evaluated on their qualifications to serve as judicial officers based on the following factors: integrity and character, experience, judgment, intellectual ability, temperament, diligence, decisiveness, professional reputation, or any other f...

  • A non-NIMBY speaks out

    Updated May 20, 2010

It’s not true that only NIMBY’s (Not In My Back Yarders) are complaining about Caltran’s planned Existing Alignment alternative of Highway SR76 (Mission Rd. to I-15). I don’t consider myself a NIMBY, as I live about five miles north of SR76. I’m part of the population of Fallbrook that accesses SR76 via tributary roads other than S. Mission. Caltrans has proposed two alternatives: the first one is a mere alignment and widening of the existing SR76 (Existing Alignment), fraught with safety and circulation issues because,...

  • Iowa Street K-8 is my answer

    Updated May 20, 2010

Iowa Street School (ISS) needs 10 more students for eighth grade to provide us the alternative school to overcrowding, overburdened teachers. My daughter successfully completed K-sixth at Live Oak, but struggled profusely. For seventh grade, I enrolled her in the Julian Charter School (JCS) in Temecula and it was fantastic. Seventeen kids in the grade; individual help was provided consistently; and her grades, self-esteem, work studies all blossomed. JCS changed their school to K-6 for next fall. We need you to enroll in the...

  • Will our local judiciary's independence be hijacked?

    Updated May 20, 2010

This election will be different: Failure to vote for judges may result in the induction of the slate of inferior judges selected by a socially regressive right wing organization. The current team of highly skilled and responsible judges could be voted out, damaging the professional independence of the judiciary, subjecting it to dictation from outside religious and fringe political brokers. Who are these people? A group of fundamentalists called www.bettercourtsnow.com which was formed last year to install a slate of judges t...

  • SR76 Southerly Route would be safest one for residents

    Updated May 20, 2010

I am concerned about the proposed ideas for the improvement of SR76 and its impact on our community. My concern is for my parents and their neighbors who live on a private street off of Gird about a mile north of SR76. The improvements to the existing highway need to include safe evacuation in case of fire. Remember, the residents of Fallbrook were ordered to evacuate during the Rice Fire of 2007. In case of another devastating wild fire, all residents need to feel secure about being able to get out of their home and out of...
