The couple has two children: Second Lieutenant Ryan Freaney, USAF, stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and Courtney Freaney, who is entering her junior year at the University of California at Irvine and will study in Paris, France, for the fall semester. Bob and Jennifer will celebrate their 25th year together with family and friends at home and at the Fallbrook Music Society’s Con...

  • Calling all chili cooks!

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Fallbrook’s chili contest, the last of the downtown Hot Summer Nights Series, is looking for chili cooks. Friday, August 31, between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. will be the time to prove that your chili is the very best in Fallbrook. Contestants are required to provide six gallons of chili for the tasting, “prepared and delivered hot,” with provisions for keeping the chili hot during the serving. Tasters are allowed to vote up until 7:15 p.m. for their favorite chili. Competition between the chili cooks is a lot of fun, besides a cha...

Boy Scout Troop #739 will hold its first annual rummage sale and shred day Saturday, August 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. There will be many gently used treasures for sale as well as a shredding truck donated by Rich Krause of Shred Force. • Might does not make right

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Michael Garson, a longtime “spin” doctor for the Bush dynasty, postulates a program of events which is laughable in its absurdity. He wants us to accept that the invasion and occupation of Iraq was a “good” thing, and therefore, everything that the US has done since is justified. What arrogance! Since when has this country been granted the God-given right to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign country? Let’s face it – Iraq posed no threat to the USA, and we have no justification for the invasion and occupation....

  • Thank you to volunteers

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Fallbrook High School would like to thank all of the volunteers that made this year’s registration process so successful. Our dedicated parent and community volunteers were simply amazing! They worked tirelessly for six days, four hours a day, to help register most of our nearly 3000 students. Without the help of these extraordinary individuals, and the dedication and organization of Patti Wiley, our PTSA Parent Volunteer Coordinator, registration would not be possible. Once again, Fallbrook’s community spirit shines thr...

  • Thank you to tsunami fundraiser donors

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our successful tsunami fundraising where $10k was successfully wired directly to the people of Sri lanka via Gamini’s family friend Aloy. He then distributed funds to Prithipura Infant Home (a home for the mentally and physically handicapped) as well as the goods we shipped, the chlorine tablets for the drinking water and helped families make a living again with fishing boats and homes. We are so grateful to friends and family who helped us to give to these young families and help t...

  • Regulations apply to everyone

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

The more years I spend in the “Friendly Village” the more I’m amazed at a few small town peculiarities. In Fallbrook there are signage regulations in place, just as in any responsible town. Why is it that certain members of the community (Lloyd Reighley, DBA Rainbow Signs) assume that rules and regulations apply to everyone but them? The struggle to make changes that enhance the quality of life for the majority of residents is fraught with some aggravation. Regrettably there are always some individuals that feel the solut...

  • How important is publicity?

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

The Angel Society could not have achieved their level of success without publicity! We are grateful to Debbie Ramsey and her staff at the Village News for their support of all our projects and for publicizing our philanthropic contributions. Our recent Christmas in July Sale was a huge success and we would like to thank all those who made it possible. Betty Pierce, chair, and the board of directors received help from many volunteer workers who sorted and priced items that had been donated throughout the year. Of course, we...

  • RE: 'Fallbrook Design Review Board incompetent' [August 9, 2007]

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Having had experience presenting signage to the Design Review Board and having watched area businesses and non-profit charities struggle during this process I second the motion by Lloyd Reighley. I have witnessed inconsistent decisions by this Board. In addition, when I asked a board member what guidelines she and the board used as a basis for approval she informed me that she was not familiar with the guidelines, but rather, relied on direction from the Chair. The decisions by the board should follow specific guidelines not...

  • Do we want more vacant storefronts?

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

The opening of the Fresh & Easy store is something I am eagerly awaiting. I am looking forward to shopping at a store that offers convenient, healthy, prepared foods in a newly revamped shopping center. Fresh & Easy will be a wonderful addition to our family oriented town with busy kids and parents on the go. I was outraged to hear that the DPLU along with Sheriff’s Dept denial of a PCN letter have forced the Fresh & Easy store to halt construction. The sale of liquor in the area is a zero sum game. What will change is the m...

  • RE: 'An open letter to Grace Gabrielli

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

To: Gene and Deborah Zinn First, I’d like to offer my condolences about the loss of the tree on your lot. I love the trees at the Park; they are what make Valley Oaks a special and beautiful place to live. I do not take it lightly whenever we have to remove a tree. Any trimming or pruning we do is intended to promote the well being of the trees. If I were to take a political stance, I would say that I am ‘pro tree.’ We only remove trees that are showing signs of disease or distress, and could present a safety hazard. We wa...

  • Fallbrook Chamber supports Fresh & Easy store

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Phil Delaney, chairman of the board of the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce, sent the following letter stating the Chamber’s position regarding the Fresh & Easy Fallbrook store location: August 7, 2007 Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Inc. Peter Whittingham Curt Pringle & Associates 2400 E. Katella Avenue, Suite 350 Anaheim, CA 92806 Dear Mr. Whittingham: The Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce supports the principal that purchases should be made locally. Therefore, Fresh and Easy’s proposed Fallbrook location will provide a ben...

  • RE: "I've got a tip for you" [July 26, 2007]

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

In regards to an editorial about tip jars written by Debbie Ramsey a few weeks back: I run a shop [deli] and am asked frequently if we have a tip jar. My response is as always, “We don’t have a tip jar, but if you would like to tip the person who made you such a good sandwich you may give the tip to them directly.” I never want to guilt trip a customer into paying more than my normal price. A tip jar seems to do just that. “Please fill our jar, we don’t get paid enough.” That is what a tip jar says to me. So do we put mone...

  • I say Wright is wrong

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

I find it amusing that someone named Wright could be so wrong as she was in her most recent diatribe against Chris Fuller. Al Gore’s son being arrested for speeding, DUI, and drug possession is hardly the moral equivalence of underage drinking by the Bush girls. Gore was embarrassed because his son stole his thunder during the week he was trying to drum up support for his Global Warming Live Earth Concerts, which by the way were a big bust. It was the least watched program on television that night. Her insinuation that P...

  • Rep. Issa casts vote against kids' health

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Despite the strong pleas of constituents in Fallbrook and surrounding areas, Rep. Darrell Issa abandoned our children and voted against the highly popular and desperately needed State Child’s Health Care Program (SCHIP). In effect for more than a decade, SCHIP is one of those success stories that should be promoted rather than dropped. Despite the negative votes of Republicans Issa, Brian Bilbray and Duncan Hunter, the bill passed by a small majority on August 1 and now will go to the president, who vows he will veto the b...

  • Bonsall Woman's Club plans 'Magic' events,

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

While others may still be in the throes of summer vacation, the hardworking members of the Bonsall Woman’s Club have begun working in earnest on their popular annual charitable event “Magic of Christmas.” The group is pleased to move their regular monthly meetings (the first Thursday of each month) back to San Luis Rey Downs Country Club in Bonsall beginning September 6. This will mark the fifteenth year the organization has staged the Magic of Christmas events in order to raise funds for philanthropic causes. The title...

  • The clock is ticking

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

FALLBROOK — It’s almost time for school to start again! While some students will feel excited to embark on a new school year, others will be disappointed that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or even a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things they will encounter: new teachers, new friends and maybe even a new school. The first day back Most teachers begin the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the exciting things the students will do that year. Some tea...
