  • Good habits for school success

    Updated Aug 21, 2008

Here are some tips and techniques that families can use to help improve this school year. Feed the body and the mind. Just as students feed their minds with the many lessons learned at school, they should never forget to also fuel their bodies with a well-balanced diet. Poor nutrition can cause energy levels to sag, therefore having a trickle-down effect on attention levels and classroom performance. If time is always an issue in the morning, consider meals they can eat on the way to school. Yogurt-and-fruit-based smoothies,...

  • Property tax relief possible

    Updated Aug 21, 2008

SAN DIEGO — County Assessor Gregory J. Smith would like to remind property owners that tax relief is still available if their property’s market value has fallen below its assessed value. For all practical purposes, this only affects those property owners who purchased their property at the height of the current real estate market. Once reduced, the Assessor’s Office must then annually revi...

  • Surrendering to the choice

    Updated Aug 21, 2008

We all search for it. We try to buy it, slide various substances down our throat to attain it and search for it in others. It can rob us of sleep and lack of it makes us miserable. No matter how we try, it can be so illusive – this thing called peace. When I look back over my life the most peaceful moments were when I felt loved, listened to and accepted. How about you? In 1John 4:9-10, we see the fruition of God’s love for us: “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we mi...

  • The place of material possessions in the life of a Christian

    Updated Aug 21, 2008

During the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry it was not unusual for the people of Israel to take their unsettled disputes to a respected Rabbi; but Jesus refused to become involved in at least one dispute about money (see Luke 12:13-34). However, out of that request, Jesus took the opportunity to teach his followers about the place of material possessions in their lives. To those who had an abundant supply of possessions, Jesus spoke the “Parable of the Rich Fool.” He never saw beyond himself. There is no parable which is so fu...
