Blue Thong Society sips martinis, fights frump

Where does a woman go when she yearns to be with a group of hip women, like herself, sipping a blue martini, and at the same time, promote charitable causes? Well, The Blue Thong Society, of course!

“We are reconnecting women, giving back to the community, and having a lot of fun doing it,” said a bright-eyed, Kelly Golden, co-founder of The Blue Thong Society. And having fun is just what this society is doing these days.

Golden, along with other Blue Thongers, enjoyed their luncheon at the Fallbrook/Bonsall chapter monthly meeting at Hukilau Restaurant on May 12.

Its mantra, “Fight Frump” is taken quite seriously. Growing older in the Blue Thong Society does not mean the time has come to slip on white lace gloves, drink tea and have a crochet blanket covering your legs. Instead, these ladies embrace the journey of life with their signature blue martini in one hand, while helping charitable organizations with the other hand. They are the representation of a true sisterhood, where compassion and support is ever-present.

In a private room at the Hukilau Restaurant, club merchandise was displayed among the twinkling scented candles. These Blue Thong items consisted of cute tank tops, spa robes, flip flops, martini glasses and shakers, soaps, hats, thongs and boy shorts. One popular tee-shirt had the “Blue Thong Philosophy” printed on it that read: Drink blue martinis, support charities, be stylish, sassy, hip, edgy, have a youthful spirit, embrace milestones, be cool, fun loving, wear hip-huggers and bell bottoms, be sympathetic to others, have inner harmony and peace, love your friends and family, fight frump and most of all, enjoy life.

Blue Thongers vary in age, ranging from 21 (the minimum age requirement) to 100 years of age. Members are retired professionals, successful business women, students and homemakers. This society is a melting pot of creative, effervescent women who have a zest for life.

Bridgett Renner, the Chapter Director of Fallbrook and Bonsall, was proud to announce the charitable organization they would be adopting.

“We will be helping Michelle’s Place,” said Renner, smiling. Michelle’s Place, located in Murrieta, is a breast cancer resource center for women. She went on to say that providing a social venue for women in the community was important to her.

This organization has filled a void for many women. In fact, Golden is still shocked from the tidal wave of response from new members. New chapters of the Blue Thong Society are sprouting regularly. Since its inception in April 2006, it now has an impressive 190 chapters and 2,200 members fanning across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“I never thought it would catch on this fast,” said Golden.

Golden admitted she clocks in almost the same amount of hours with the Blue Thong Society that she does with her real job. Creating the society has been a lot of work, but it has been worth every moment of her time.

“The Blue Thong Society has been really incredible,” remarked Golden. She added, “It’s been a journey; and it’s all about the journey.”
