Salm takes second at Orange Show

Mike Salm finished second in the Hoosier Tires Modified Series main event June 9 at San Bernardino’s Orange Show Speedway.

The Fallbrook driver qualified fourth and was in second place from the second lap to the end of the 75-lap main event.

“We were pretty satisfied with our run,” Salm said. “The car worked really good.”

Salm qualified fourth with a lap of 15.81 seconds on the quarter-mile track. “We were happy with the qualifying time,” he said. “Times are really close up there.”

The race will be shown on the Versus Channel June 30 and July 5 and was extended to 75 laps for television purposes, so no Trophy Dash or heat race took place that night for the Modifieds. Fast qualifier Jason Patison drew an inversion pill which reversed the positions of the top two qualifiers, keeping Salm in the second row for the start of the main event.

In the second lap Danny Gay hit Patison from behind and caused a yellow flag, sending both Gay and Patison to the back of the 22-car field. That put Salm into second, behind leader and eventual winner Dean Kuhn.

“We didn’t have much for Dean,” Salm said. “He had a little better car than us.”

Kuhn and his crew had provided setup assistance and other advice to Salm during practice the day before the race.

Billy Johannes finished third. “He was running us real hard the whole race,” Salm said.

Johannes waited for Salm to make a mistake, which did not occur. “He was running us pretty darn clean,” Salm said. “It was a good race.”

Salm’s next race is scheduled to take place July 21 at Orange Show.
