Warrior netters win singles, doubles in league tournament

Fallbrook High School tennis players won both the singles championship and the doubles championship at the Avocado League individual tournament November 5-8 at the Fallbrook Tennis Club.

Freshman Hailey Johnson won the singles tournament in a finals involving two Fallbrook players, and the combination of senior Angela Maddock and freshman Jessica Willett captured the doubles title.

“It’s actually what we’ve worked for,” Fallbrook coach Dave Ramirez said of winning both the singles and the doubles championship. “I just felt bad for our finalists in the singles. It was kind of tough to see one of our girls lose. But other than that, it was a nice showing for Fallbrook.”

In the singles final November 8 Johnson beat Fallbrook junior Roxanne Parker in a pair of 6-3 sets. “It was actually a pretty good match,” Ramirez said.

Johnson had advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the semifinals November 7 over Carlsbad’s Michelle Lin while Parker’s semifinal win was a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Carlsbad’s Rachel Shinto.

Maddock and Willett played Rachel Forseth and Jenn Clay of Rancho Buena Vista in the doubles final November 8. The Warrior duo took the first set by a 6-2 score and won the match with a 6-0 victory in the second set.

Forseth and Clay had advanced to the finals with a win November 7 over Fallbrook seniors Spencer Spagnuola and Ashley Dirrigo. That match went three sets with Forseth and Clay tallying a 6-4 win in the first set, Spagnuola and Dirrigo forcing a third set with a 6-3 win, and Forseth and Clay capturing the deciding set by a 6-2 score.

Spagnuola and Dirrigo then played in the third-place match November 8 but fell to Nikki Consolacion and Megan Mensalvas of Vista High School. Spagnuola and Dirrigo won the first set, 6-4, and the second set was tied at six games apiece before Consolacion and Mensalvas earned a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaking game. In the third set Consolacion and Mensalvas earned the third-place accolade with a 6-0 win.

Maddock and Willett had defeated Consolacion and Mensalvas in the semifinal by 6-3 and 6-1 scores.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” Ramirez said. “They’re very great sportsmen and they support each other.”
