Foul fowl discovered by Dept. of Agriculture

Last updated 4/3/2008 at Noon

WASHINGTON, DC — Food & Water Watch recently released an update of a 2006 report detailing the names of chicken producers who have failed to meet federal standards for salmonella.

The names of these failing plants have never been publicly released by the US Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for meat and poultry inspection.

The consumer group’s analysis of the USDA’s salmonella testing program provides direct evidence of the danger posed by a policy change that reduces the frequency of testing at some plants.

To see the report and find out how to identify broiler chickens from these plants, go to http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/food/pubs/reports/more-foul-fowl.
