Hasvold sets meet record at Torrey Pines Invitational

Fallbrook High School senior Bret Hasvold not only won the 1,500-meter run at the Torrey Pines Invitational March 22 but also set a meet record for that race.

Hasvold won the race in 4:03 and finished eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. The meet record of 4:06 had been set in 1999.

“It was pretty cool,” Hasvold said of setting the record.

“I felt really good when I was running and had a good feeling after,” Hasvold said. “I was hoping I could break four minutes, but there was no one else around me so it made it kind of tough, but I was happy with it.”

The time was also a personal best for Hasvold at that distance, although most high school track meets have 1,600-meter races rather than 1,500-meter runs.

Hasvold had run a 1,600-meter race March 19 during a dual meet with Rancho Bernardo. “It felt pretty tough to run on Wednesday, but on Saturday I felt really good,” he said.

Hasvold led the Torrey Pines Invitational race throughout the entire competition. “I didn’t think I ran that fast,” he said.

Hasvold last ran the Torrey Pines Invitational as a sophomore. “I was just really happy about it,” he said of his 2008 performance.
