An outstanding student was overlooked

Fallbrook High invited graduating seniors to its annual awards night (June 3) with letters stating, “You have received one or more awards and/or scholarships.”

One deserving young lady who had applied for more than 30 scholarships was joyful when she received her letter. She knew she wouldn’t be able to attend a California State university without financial assistance. She invited family (her dad drove down from Twentynine Palms) and friends to attend with her.

Unfortunately, she did not qualify for either of the awards for military dependents (her Marine dad has been deployed to Iraq twice) because he is stationed out of Twentynine Palms and not Camp Pendleton!

This most deserving student (in the top five percent of her class) did not receive one scholarship. Several students with much lower GPAs received multiple scholarships.

I asked the ladies in the school’s Career Center why she was invited. They said because she is a member of the California honor society. She knows that – she pays dues to stay a member! The ladies said she should have applied for even more scholarships.

They said the students who were awarded multiple scholarships were in their office daily! I thought scholarships were awarded to the best, the brightest and the most deserving!

This young lady is outstanding, helps with her younger brother and sister, makes dinner (mom works evenings) and works at a job until 10 p.m. Her spring GPA is 4.6!
