Walker named FUHSD Teacher of the Year

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Union High School District (FUHSD) is pleased to announce that Kelly Walker has been selected as its Teacher of the Year. Walker will be competing with teachers of the year from other districts for recognition as a San Diego County Teacher of the Year.

Walker is in her sixth year teaching both English and U.S. History at Ivy High School, a continuation school in the FUHSD.

“I take much joy in helping students transition from perceiving education as a waste of time and continuation high school as only a place to make up credits, to valuing and investing in their learning, resulting in a desire to continue their education after high school,” said Walker.

Walker recognizes that continuation high school students can be overlooked, with a history of underperforming. “More often than not, they are the kids who stay in their community, they get jobs and they raise their families,” said Walker. “The more education they have, the better thinkers they are, and the more positive contributions they will make to their community as adults.”

Walker said is proud of the career preparation opportunities her students experience. In addition to administering career and college interest surveys, she facilitates guest speaker presentations and field trips to local community colleges, career-technical schools, and community venues such as Camp Pendleton and the Museum of Tolerance.

Walker is said to have a stellar reputation with her colleagues. Fellow teacher Connie Fellios said, “What I appreciate most about Kelly is that she is a strong critical and creative thinker, who is continually questioning and searching in order to improve her practice. This commitment to professional growth enables her to effectively support student learning and her willingness to share her learning improves the effectiveness of fellow teachers.”

FUHSD superintendent Dale Mitchell said, “Fallbrook Union High School District is proud to recognize Kelly Walker as its Teacher of the Year.”
