Bonsall High School launches two new extracurricular programs

BONSALL – Where do the arts and sports meet? At Bonsall High School. The community's newest secondary school, Bonsall High School, continues to grow, not only in the academics it offers, but now in the visual/performing arts and sports.

Under the direction of Andrea Breuninger, newly instated athletic director, BHS just completed a successful cross country season and is off to a great start in basketball. The team has easily triumphed over all their opponents in their preseason games. After Thanksgiving break, the soccer and baseball teams will be kicking off.

Coaches Mencias and Costa said they are excited to bring baseball to Bonsall High School and plan to grow the team into a North County powerhouse. Softball, coached by Emily Casillas, has fielded an impressive team and they plan on dominating their division. In the spring, the golf team will be underway, coached by Bonsall's own Kyle Straeter. The golf team's home course will be the Golf Club of California.

Athletics isn't the only program emerging at BHS. The Bonsall High School Theatre Company performed its inaugural show, an original adaptation of Chekhov's comedy, "The Bear" entitled "Three Bears." The newly formed Theater and Film classes are taught by Hollywood screenwriter/director Jen Robinson Arellano.

"The concept for the play was developed with input from the entire drama class. Students transferred what they learned about stagecraft, design, and performance to create something uniquely their own," she said. "The Bear" wrapped last week after three solid, sold out performances. The Bonsall High School Theatre Company is gearing up for a new production this spring.
