Rugby played for fun in prom dresses

FALLBROOK – The recent third annual Prom Dress Rugby Match was played on March 30 by all members of the Fallbrook Girls Rugby Club. A “friendly” game consisting of players from under-14 through under-18 comprised the two teams with their coaches joining in the fun!

The girls and coaches chose formal dresses at local thrift shops or from Coach Marin Pinnell’s bag of frocks, and accessorized with ribbons, bows, and cleats. As the game proceeded, tackles were not easy on the dresses, and it was not unusual to see a player running the ball with dress parts flowing behind her. At half-time, some players – out of necessity – revisited the dress bag to find a new dress. Parts of lace, tulle, satin, and peau de soie silk littered the field amidst amazing rugby plays and laughter.

Coach Pinnell introduced the concept of Prom Dress Rugby after hearing about similar fun events at colleges where rugby is played.
