  • Rebuilding assistance sought for fire victims on 'illegitimate' lots

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

The wildfires of October 2003 and October 2007 destroyed or damaged more than 3,500 homes in San Diego County and forced those homeowners into the rebuilding process. Some of those property owners have found that their homes were not on legal buildable lots, and on July 23 the San Diego County Board of Supervisors directed the county’s Chief Administrative Officer to explore remedies to allow those homeowners to rebuild. The supervisors’ 5-0 vote directed the Chief Administrative Officer to investigate options which wou...

The FCPG was going to vote on whether or not they would have approved a modification to the Major Use Permit that KB Homes has on the area. • RE: 'An outstanding student was overlooked' (Letter, Village News, 6/26/08)

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

This is a follow-up to my Letter to the Editor regarding the unfair way that scholarships are given out to students at Fallbrook High School. I specifically wrote about one student who I felt was unfairly overlooked. Well, I am happy to report that my letter did some good. St. Vincent de Paul offered a scholarship for $1,000 to the young lady I had written about! They also felt that the scholarships were going to the “squeaky wheels.” So, thank you very much from both me and the young lady I had written about (her name is... Full story

  • Fair is fair

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

In the past, when the Fresh & Easy store first opened in Fallbrook, I was critical of the stated marketing plan and execution. I have changed my opinion after a couple more visits to the store. It is well stocked, lighted and easy to get around. Most importantly, there are plenty of friendly and helpful employees who know their way around and who will show the customer where everything is. Fresh & Easy is an asset to Fallbrook shoppers and it would seem its presence is also a detriment to the crimes that used to be common in... Full story

  • RE: 'Were we at the same meeting?' (Letter, Village News, 7/17/08)

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

(Letter, Village News, 7/17/08) I have been reading the opinion page for the past few weeks pertaining to the FPUD board meeting of June 30. I was present and in my opinion the letter that Darlene Dakovich wrote is correct. I heard what she heard not once but several times and Archie McPhee missed a few points on the Orange Grove Energy Plant. FPUD will not supply any potable water to the plant in stage one, which we are in now, nor stage two or any stage after that – only reclaimed water that now is in excess and going to t...

  • The quarry

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

The majestic hills surround our communities; rugged and rocky, rising higher and higher. They stretch as far as the eye can see, in all their glory. They have become more precious as the threat of a quarry looms. Do you stop, ever, to notice the beauty? Think about Rainbow, Fallbrook, with the rural lifestyle; grove after grove of trees, fields of flowers, plants, creeks winding their way to the rivers. Temecula, Murrieta; majestic rolling hills of the wine country; the history and charm of Old Town; De Luz, with sprawling,... Full story

  • Thank you to Fallbrook 4-H

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

This was my first full year in Fallbrook 4-H; I was a junior leader in the reptile group, led by Maggie Kibbet and Jennifer Mathews. I was also involved in a robotics group with Bill Woodall and was in the communications group with Jean Combs. I have found that 4-H has been rewarding to me in that I have developed better skills in these three areas. I have learned more about computers and other electronics, become more comfortable speaking in front of people and have a greater understanding of reptiles and amphibians. Not...

  • For a real friend of the military, vote Hamilton

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

On July 21 the AP leaked a memo from Republican leadership to all Republican congressmen advising that they can “vote with the opposing party if necessary” in order to “insure your re-election in November.” Okay, military families, now watch Issa, Bilbray and Duncan starting to vote “yea” on increasing benefits for active, wounded and retired veterans just so they can get reelected and then, if reelected, they will go back to the “nays” to defeat funding for increased medical, educational, housing, shorter deployments and the...

  • More on FPUD's deal with Orange Grove Energy

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

California’s Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission issued a notice of hearing concerning SDG&E’s Orange Grove Energy power plant. This small power plant exemption (07-SPPE-2) was cancelled and their new Docket Number is 08-AFC-4. The Energy Commission’s project manager (Felicia Miller) recently informed me that Rainbow Water refused to provide Orange Grove Energy with any water. Therefore, FPUD will truck into Orange Grove Energy’s plant 6.9 million gallons of potable water/year and another 3.9 million...

  • As they beat the war drums for Iran

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

I just wish we had the collective balls to get our government and country back the way the Bolivians did; they elected a common man which got rid of the corruption in government and the leaches (US corporations) from their resources. Please see the following short video to understand what the banking cartels and corporations are doing around the world: “Economic Hit Man,” www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjPoeQRewiE. Concerning Iran, which is by far the most pressing issue today, please see an essay (“Putting Words in Ahmad... Full story

  • Corruption in plain sight

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

The Bush administration pushed for, and got, the biggest bailout in history of private shareholders, at taxpayer’s expense. The National Debt was raised $800 billion to cover it. The banking and mortgage industries and millions of homeowners are in terrible shape. Foreclosure rates are at levels not seen since the Great Depression, and bank failure rates could reach Depression-era levels, if not for swift action by the government to bail them out, and even then it will be too late for many. Last week Congress worked on a bail...

    Updated Jul 31, 2008

Steve and Scott McGargill, owners of Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary, are honored and humbled to assist families with funeral arrangements. In many cases, losing a loved one causes numbing grief, and it is the job of the McGargill brothers to give comfort while recognizing and carrying out the specific wishes of the family. “Our goal is to take care of everything and not give family members anything else to worry about,” said Scott. “We want to make the funeral arran...
