  • Robbery appears to be isolated case

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

A robbery that occurred shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday, November 14, at CVS Pharmacy (South Mission and Ammunition Road) appears to have been an isolated case, said Sheriff’s Detective Jeff Lauhon. Store employees reported that a man wearing all black, including a ski mask, hooded sweatshirt and cap, came into the store, acted like he had a weapon in his pocket and demanded cash. “There was no weapon seen; we don’t know that there was a gun or not,” Lauhon said. “It’s possible he had his hand in his pocket with a finger poin...

Fallbrook’s newest golf course, The Golf Club of California, a private members-only club that adjoins homes in the Sycamore Ranch development at the corner of Gird Road and SR76, has closed its doors. Owner and general manager Kay McLaughlin sent an e-mail to members October 31 stating that would be the last day of golf play, as she had “no alternative but to close the club” because “significant issues have surfaced” threatening the club’s operation. Rumors swirled about the closure; some former members speculated the club wo...

Clements’ permits for the Fallbrook Pharmacy operation were revoked following an investigation into unprofessional conduct, excessive furnishing of controlled substances and violation of both state and fede...

  • Costello provides excellent service

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

Reading of Roy Costello’s role in the Fallbrook Christmas Parade prodded me to write a long overdue letter in praise of his auto repair shop, Costello’s Auto Repair, on Aviation Road. Twice I have needed his help after fender-benders and I have received excellent service delivered with old-fashioned courtesy. Roy went out of his way to accommodate my needs and my schedule. His employees are equally helpful and courteous and it was a pleasure to do business with them. Susan Jenkins...

  • Boy Scout Troop 755 has successful food drive

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

There were no signs of economic worries as generous donors in the community helped to fill over two barrels of nonperishable food collected by the Boy Scouts of Troop 755 on November 15 at Daniel’s Market and Major Market. This is the third year that Troop 755 has served those in need with a food drive. The food will be delivered to the Fallbrook Food Pantry to directly benefit those in the Fallbrook community. In addition to allowing the Scouts to set up a collection table at their store, Major Market generously donated c...

Steele, US Bureau of Reclamation, was “to update the public on this project and obtain input on issues that should be studied in the EIS/EIR (environmental) process. Many attendees, including me, are members of the Sierra Club. Mr. Steele presented a brief SMRCUP timetable from the 1920s to 2005. Following discussions involved environmental issues and costs only. Mr. Steele firmly disallowed other issues/topics. Joe Naiman’s des...

  • Quick fire response impressed me

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

I would like to send my sincere appreciation to the fire personnel who responded to the fire on Sunday, November 9, down Rice Canyon. Although it was reported as being on Couser Canyon, it was north of 76 and directly east on Rice Canyon. I saw the smoke from Pala Mesa and called Cal Fire to report it. She said they were aware of it but that no one was on site as yet. By the time I traveled back across Interstate 15 and down Rice Canyon, they had two helicopters, two tankers, one spotter plane and numerous fire trucks and...

  • Only in Fallbrook

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

On Veteran’s Day, I was waiting on a customer and a gentleman came into the store and asked if we sold flag lapel pins. I said I was sorry that I did not have any and he asked if we knew where he might find one. We suggested a few places but he had already tried them to no avail. He explained that his grandfather had just passed away and they were having the funeral that day. He was from Fallbrook but was at a trade show in Las Vegas and had just driven in for the funeral – his grandfather was a World War II vet. He for...

  • RE: 'The most important job in the world' [Letter, Village News, 10/30/2008]

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

Letter-writer Scott Urquhart continues the widely held premise that the Republicans are being blamed for all of our economic problems and the war even though the Democrats have a majority in Congress. The Democrats have had a majority in Congress since January 2007. That is one year and 10 months ago. The problems we are currently are experiencing have taken a lot longer than that to germinate. The Republicans had a strong majority in Congress for the preceding 12 years. They have had the White House for the last eight years...

  • Keep your eye on the prize

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

The oil-producing countries and the American gasoline producers are not stupid, but they think that the American public is. Oil pricing and gasoline pricing is now being manipulated downward by them in hopes that we will not have the resolve necessary to increase mileage standards and develop alternative, non-petroleum-based means of producing energy. (Hmm… from over $4.50 to under $2 in six months. We don’t need no stupid, highly efficient cars.) American memories are so short and these opportunist companies and cou...

  • Our nightmare is over but the worst is yet to come

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

For the last eight years we have had a complete lack of governance, a complete lack of regulation, a complete lack of direction. The captain and crew let the Ship of State drift while it floundered along from crisis to crisis, sinking slowly. Finally the alarmed people of the nation saw what was happening and swung into action. That nightmare of governance is now ending, but the worst is yet to come. We have a new crew coming aboard, but are they too late? The economic crisis has not hit bottom yet. Millions more will lose...

  • Fundamentals of Liberal vs. Conservative thought

    Updated Nov 20, 2008

On the precipice of a sharp turn to the Left, we should understand where this direction is likely to take us. Liberals believe there is only so much wealth to go around; therefore, if there are those who have more, it’s because others didn’t get their fair share. Conservatives believe that the opportunity for wealth is unlimited and those who are willing to work the hardest will have the most. The Conservative view seems to be borne out by the fact that the Western world and particularly the US has become fabulously wea...
