Drivers' licenses for illegals passes Assembly Committee

SACRAMENTO — On a party-line vote, the Assembly Transportation Committee passed out Senate Bill 60, authored by Senator Gil Cedillo, which will give government-sanctioned drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens.

The bill is opposed by the Department of Motor Vehicles because the Department believes that it is premature to grant drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens before the Federal Government provides guidelines to the states for national security purposes.

In 2003, the Legislature repealed the bill Governor Davis signed granting drivers’ licenses for illegal aliens due to a tremendous public outcry. Today, less than two years later, the public sentiment remains the same.

“By granting illegal immigrants California Drivers Licenses, we are undermining the sacrifices made by so many Americans who have come to this country legally,” Assemblywoman Mimi Walters (R-Laguna Niguel) said in response to the Transportation Committee’s passage of SB 60.

“It is more than mere hypocrisy to authorize a government entity to validate illegal behavior by granting DMV licenses to those whose presence in this country is unlawful; it also presents a significant threat to our national security,” Walters concluded.
