Local youth does well playing bagpipes

Jordan McKay Rowley, 14, competed in a bagpipe competition this past weekend at the annual Ventura, CA, Scottish Highland Games. Rowley, who has played the pipes since age 9 under the instruction of Campbell Naismith, won first place while competing against almost 20 pipers from around the United States. He played a “Piobaireached,” a slow, long Scottish tune.

Rowley, a freshman at Fallbrook High School, loves playing bagpipes, keyboard and piano. He enjoys surfing and skateboarding and is on the high school’s cross-country team. He has piped for numerous weddings and funerals and for Highland Dancers at Local Events.

After the competition the local head of the Clan McKay gave Jordan an application to apply for a scholarship to further his education in the Scottish arts.
