Fallbrook golf fifth in league finals - Kohls sisters earn all-league

Fallbrook High School’s girls golf team placed fifth among the six Avocado League teams in the league finals October 30 and November 1 while two Warrior golfers earned berths on the all-league teams.

Sophomore Nikki Kohls finished fifth among individuals in the league tournament with a 36-hole score of 178 and earned first-team all-league honors. Her sister, senior Jackie Kohls, finished with a score of 187 to place 11th in the league finals; Jackie Kohls was given second-team all-league recognition.

The North County Conference which consists of the Avocado, Palomar, and Valley Leagues played its league finals match at the Camp Pendleton course October 31 and at the Fallbrook Golf Club November 1. The individual league champion was freshman Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, who would also win the CIF championship by seven strokes to give the Avocado League three individual CIF champions in the last five years. Although Fallbrook finished fifth among the six Avocado League teams, the squad placed 12th among the 19 North County Conference teams, so the Warriors scored better than six of the 13 Palomar League and Valley League squads.

“We were outplaying some good teams,” said Fallbrook coach Dave Heid. “That was a good sign.”

Fallbrook finished the season with a 1-9 record in dual league meets. “We actually improved quite a lot. Our goal was to break 250, and we did that three times,” Heid said.

“We were a work in progress, but all of our girls really improved,” Heid said. “I think the girls felt good about it.”

At the league meet Nikki Kohls had rounds of 87 and 89 strokes while Jackie Kohls shot 18-hole totals of 95 and 92. Jackie Kohls was one of two seniors on this year’s team (seniors Amy Boren and Catelyn Coen were injured and did not play in any of this year’s matches); the other senior was Tarynn Shada, who had rounds of 102 and 107 in the league finals to tie for 19th with her score of 209.

Shada’s two rounds in the league finals closed out her high school career. The Kohls sisters both went to the first round of the CIF tournament November 8 in Warner Springs. Nikki Kohls shot a 96 in the initial round while Jackie Kohls had a score of 98. The cut was 92, so neither advanced to the second round.

The CIF tournament thus ended Jackie Kohls’ high school career. “Nikki is a sophomore, so that’s a good sign for next year,” Heid said.

Three other members of the 2006 varsity are also sophomores while one is a freshman. “We’ve got a good nucleus to build on,” Heid said.
