Underwood Construction: creating a great new look

To embrace the new year, Underwood Construction is inviting residents to create new looks in their homes. With the help of licensed general contractor Justin Underwood, Fallbrook homeowners can improve one particular room or remodel an entire house.

Underwood says one of his greatest joys is adding windows and decks to homes built here in the 1960s and ’70s that have not taken full advantage of the views their property offers. “In many cases, the views weren’t taken into consideration when the home was originally built,” Underwood says. “It can really make a great difference just to add a window or two; it really opens things up. Fallbrook has plenty of great views.”

After growing up in the midwest and serving in the Marine Corps (stationed at Camp Pendleton), Underwood began his company two years ago in Fallbrook and enjoys seeing homes he has remodeled or built because it is a lasting reminder of his efforts.

“There’s just something rewarding about it – seeing those structures over time,” he said. Specializing in projects in Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, Vista and Temecula, Underwood says that whether the project is small or large, he enjoys establishing a personal rapport with the customer.

“Sometimes people like to do things in stages,” he said. “We’ll start by doing a master bedroom or bath and down the road they are ready to address another part of the house.” The current trend, Underwood says, is to open up select walls, raise ceilings and create a more open, airy feel.

Making a home more energy efficient is another distinct desire most people have, he says. “It seems like Fallbrook is getting colder in the winter and warmer in the summer than it used to be,” Underwood said. “Replacing old windows with new energy-efficient ones can make all the difference.”

Underwood also commented on the sudden popularity of using tile again. “We are seeing the desire for more accent tile lately,” he said. “People like what can be done in showers and on floors with tile designs. Mexican pavers are also making a big comeback.”

While some local contractors bemoan the somewhat lengthy process the County of San Diego can inflict on projects, Underwood sees it as a safeguard for everyone concerned. “I have found that the county is reasonable,” he said. “They are there to protect everyone. Basically, it makes it safer for everyone.”

Using local suppliers is important to Underwood, who says he enjoys doing business in Fallbrook and has not been disappointed. “I regularly use Pine Tree Lumber, Corcoran Tile and Fallbrook Tile, just to name a few,” he said.

With his wife, Melissa, and three children ages 9, 8 and 6, Underwood said he looks forward to helping clients in Fallbrook for many years in the future.

“I am pleased at how many word-of-mouth referrals I get,” he smiled. “I like to offer a very personalized service to people and Fallbrook has been good to me.”
