Instant rebates, energy efficiency tips for fall home makeovers

Whether homeowners are about to embark on a major remodeling project or just need a new refrigerator before the holiday season, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) offers energy-efficiency rebates and programs to help them save money and help the environment.

“Now customers can receive instant rebates on select energy-efficient appliances at participating retailers instead of waiting for a check in the mail,” says Michelle M. Mueller, vice president, customer services – mass markets for SDG&E.

“Not only will you save at the cash register, but you will save money and energy for years to come by improving overall energy performance in your home, which ultimately helps the environment.”

For example, a refrigerator can account for up to 30 percent of a home’s energy costs, and today’s new energy-efficient models use about half the energy of models built before 1993 and 40 percent less than models built as recently as 2001.

Plus, SDG&E’s refrigerator recycling program will pay $35 for an old working refrigerator or freezer and arrange a contractor to pick it up for free.

With the long nights of winter approaching, energy use can also be cut down by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, which last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs and use 75 percent less energy. They also generate significantly less heat, making them safer to operate.

A home’s lighting can account for as much as 20 percent of annual energy costs, so this could add up to significant savings. SDG&E has pre-discounted energy-efficient light bulbs sold in many area stores.
