Local 91-year-old to appear in two holiday roles

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook resident Don Foulkes, 91, will once again lend his acting talent to the Friendly Village’s holiday season. Foulkes will recite “Twas the Night Before Christmas” at the Grand Tradition Estate and Garden’s ‘Brunch with Santa’ event on Sunday, Dec. 15 and play four different roles in Curtain Call Company’s “It’s a Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Play” at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club from Dec. 6 to 21.

‘Brunch with Santa’ will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. It features a scrumptious holiday brunch with entertainment from carolers, ballerinas, and Santa Claus.

In the live radio play, the audience is supposedly in the radio studio watching the actors broadcast the show over the airwaves. They get to see the clever ways that many sound effects are made, and be a part of the broadcast with their enthusiastic applause.

“It’s an advantage to have a member of the cast who can remember the days of radio, and lend authenticity to the production,” said director Mary Fry.

Foulkes will play the roles of “the announcer,” “Uncle Billy,” “Nick, the bartender,” and the “toll booth attendant.”

Foulkes, who will soon celebrate his 66th wedding anniversary with wife Mary, has resided in Fallbrook since 1987.

A prisoner of war during World War II, Foulkes worked for General Electric for 40 years as a district manager in utility sales. In the past he has also served as emcee of the Miss Fallbrook pageant as well as master of ceremonies for a wide variety of events.
