Learn backyard composting basics at library workshop

FALLBROOK – The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation will provide an expert educator to speak about backyard composting, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Fallbrook Library's community room at 124 S. Mission Road in Fallbrook. The workshop is funded by San Diego County.

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation is a county program that guides businesses to sustainable practices and empowers students, adults, and organizations to become environmental stewards in their communities through education and action. In San Diego, community waste requires 706,000 tons of landfill capacity annually, and it releases 127,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases each year. However, 56 percent of that waste is edible or compostable, and 21 percent of it is recyclable. Instead of wasting away as trash, these materials could be used as valuable resources.

The workshop will cover what is composting and why it is so important; what tools and materials are needed; which items are compostable and which are not and harvesting and using the compost.

The talk is presented by the Fallbrook Climate Action Team in conjunction with Solana Center and the Fallbrook Library. FCAT is a local group of volunteers promoting discussion and action to mitigate the effects of climate change. The presentation is open to the public and their will be a raffle for a free compost accessory to one lucky attendee.
