  • Locals team up to save man's life at golf club

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Bob and Teri Reed’s intention was to escape from their home in Los Angeles on a beautiful summer day, play a round of golf at Fallbrook Golf Club, then enjoy dinner and an overnight visit with Bob’s mother, Mary Reed, who resides here. While July 16 started out as the couple had planned, it quickly turned into one of near tragedy. Shortly after finishing the ninth hole on the golf course, it was about noon when Bob and Teri decided cold sodas were needed to quench their thirst. With Bob in the lead, the couple walked up to...

  • RE: The Bible is God's Word [Letter, Village News, 7/22/10]

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Infinite numbers of seemingly miraculous computations are found in numerical analysis of text. Assign values for English letters using the same pattern used in Ivan Panin’s analysis of Arabic, Greek and Hebrew: A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J=10 K=20 L=30 M=40 N=50 O=60 P=70 Q=80 R=90 S=100 T=200 U=300 V=400 W=500 X=600 Y=700 Z=800 Now analyze the first line of Poe’s “The Raven”: “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.” There’re 7x7 letters. First and last words sum to 202x7; the first letters...

  • Re: 'Shame on those that discredit Granite' [Letter, Village News, 7/15/10]

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

In response to Sten Thordarson’s opinion letter, the reality of the Liberty Quarry proposal is no longer one of whether it would cause significant air, environmental, traffic, water, wildlife and health detriments. This has already been established by Granite’s reports, Riverside Planning and confirmed by more than 100 local medical physicians. Riverside County Planning published this statement: “DEIR No. 475 determined that the proposed project would result in significant and unavoidable impacts to air quality and traff...

  • Re: 'President promised change' [Letter, Village News, 7-15-10]

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Mr. Wright, if you were offended by something I said in Mr. Lowery’s defense, I apologize. My comments were not directed specifically at you. The subject, however, is timely. In an opinion article in the WSJ, Fred Barnes wrote about a secret sect of left-wing journalists formed in early 2008 when Obama’s candidacy was in jeopardy. Private e-mails were exchanged among this group on how to deal with the situation. A writer from The Washington Independent proposed attacking Obama’s critics as racists. He wrote, “…take one of th...

The Santa Margarita River (SMR) is an environmentally significant and sensitive property in Southern California. In 1962, Murray Schloss lovingly bequeathed the original 2,480 acres to SDSU for what has become the university’s research station. Since then, Camp Pendleton, San Diego County, Fallbrook Land Conservancy, FPUD and many others have collectively sacrificed much to protect the SMR corridor from the hands of developers. Now, a powerful company wants to create the largest open pit mine ever known to our area in the m...

  • How government works

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Once upon a time, the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of the desert. Congress said, “Someone may steal from it at night.” So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, “How does the watchman do his job without instruction?” So they created a planning department and hired two people: one to write instructions, and one to do time studies. Then Congress said, “How will we know the night watchman is doing his job correctly?” So they created a quality control dep...

  • Attention Medicare insurance card holders

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Do you also have a second insurance car, like AARP Secure Horizons? Well, I do too. Only to find out that Secure Horizons doesn’t complete Medicare – it replaces it, and you now pay Secure Horizons and Medicare. However, Medicare doesn’t pay any of the doctors or hospital bills. My husband is a retired Marine and we have Tricare for Life. So, my husband, Roscoe has Medicare and Tricare for Life. When he goes to the doctor, he doesn’t pay a co-pay fee like I do with Secure Horizons. Two years ago I was in the Escon...

  • Anything for a vote

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Is there any politician out there with enough courage to stand strong against illegal immigration? This fine country is in part what it is today due to the diverse heritage of those who have immigrated here legally over the past several hundred years. While holding on to many of their own cultural beliefs, they were still proud to become English-speaking American citizens, here for a better life while supporting our great nation. Why should we expect anything less? H. and J. Crow...

  • Why the concern over the route of SR76?

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

This is 2010, not 1999; when Caltrans first proposed a ‘Northern Alignment;’ when taxpayers’ money went into four different alternative option studies; when people off of Ramona Drive paid attention and sued Caltrans… and won! This is the year when the Jefferies Ranch entrance was closed permanently because, as a Caltrans employee stated in March 2010, “They weren’t paying attention.” Now those Oceanside residents have only one way out; fire code? Well, Fallbrook and Bonsall had better pay attention. Tax payers’ dolla...

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

Some alien monsters have become old since Arnold Schwarzenegger first battled one in the original “Predator” film released in 1987. Now we have “Predators” (plural) which is currently being shown at Ultra Star Cinemas in Bonsall. There are several Predators in the new movie – some are big, strong, and have better weapons than others who are small and less powerful – but in the end, the resurface of this alien character was mainly used to sell tickets at the box office. “Predators” producer Robert Rodriguez h...
