UPDATE: Camp Pendleton releases name of mortally wounded Marine

SAN DIEGO - Military authorities released the name Tuesday of a 19-year-old Marine who died of a gunshot wound to the head at a Camp Pendleton firearms-training facility.

Lance Cpl. Dominic Schraft of Vienna, Missouri, was found mortally wounded at Marksmanship Training Range 214 on the grounds of the northern San Diego County Marine Corps station about 6 a.m. Monday, said 1st Lt. Colleen McFadden, public affairs officer for the 1st Marine Division. Associated Press has reported that he was taking part in a training exercise in which live ammunition was used.

Marine Corps officials declined to disclose further details about the shooting, except to say that it was under investigation.

Schraft was assigned to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He joined the Marine Corps in August 2014 and served as a field radio operator.

Schraft, who had not deployed during his time in the Marine Corps, was the recipient of a National Defense Service Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Camp Pendleton Marine suffers fatal gunshot at firearms-training facility

SAN DIEGO - A Marine suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head at a Camp Pendleton firearms-training facility today, military officials reported.

The victim was found mortally wounded at Marksmanship Training Range 214 on the grounds of the northern San Diego County Marine Corps station about 6 a.m., said 1st Lt. Colleen McFadden, public affairs officer for the 1st Marine Division.

The circumstances of the shooting were under investigation, and the victim's name was withheld pending family notification.

"The command's priorities are to take care of the Marine's family and friends,'' McFadden said. ``We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time.''
