Area artists win at fair

DEL MAR — Seventeen local artists entered the San Diego County Fair fine art competition, hanging in the Fine Art Building through July 4. Six won awards.

Topping the list of Fallbrook winners was Jack Ragland, likely the community’s most prolific painter. Ragland won second place in Acrylic-Representational People for “La Cena;” two third place wins in Acrylic-Non-Representational for “Liquid Amber” and in Oil-Non-Representational for “Excitation;” and an Honorable Mention for “Dangerous Grass” in Acrylic-Representational, Animals.

Adding to the award winners was Jim Bates with a third place for “On Top of the World” in Watercolor-Representational, Animals; Penny Fedorchak, an Honorable Mention for “Release” in Watercolor-Non-Representational; Mark Giglio, an Honorable Mention for “Druid Throne” in Other 3-D, Not Listed; Ruth Parker, an Honorable Mention for “Protea” in Watercolor-Representational, Still-lifes and Florals; and Michael Steirnagle, first place for “Woman in Repose,” in Oil-Representational, People.

Other Fallbrook artists whose work was chosen for display were Shirley Calvert, Ray Fedorchak, Betty Herrington, Skip Newton, Natasha Ragland, Patricia Saunders, Phee Sherline, Caroline Taylor, Dorene Terryberry, Caroline Vice and Carol Zelaski.

To be accepted for exhibition at this mammoth event is an honor in itself, as only approximately half of the submissions are chosen. Artists selected to display their fine art during the fair, regardless of awards, are considered the best in the county.
