  • Appreciation walk ends with a special encounter

Tim O Leary, Special to the Village News|Updated May 9, 2024

Serendipity recently led me to a hidden treasure and introduced me to a pixie philanthropist who was a muse for one of the world's great philosophers. This delightful encounter came about through a chance invitation after church on Sunday. It was a dear friend, Lila Sandschulte, who set the hook by telling me that the widow of famed cartoonist Charles M. Schulz would be a special guest at an appreciation walk later that day. I drove directly to the location – the goldfinch arr...

  • Rain and heat each cause problems for roses

Frank Brines, ARS Master Rosarian|Updated May 2, 2024

This year continued the signs of climate change with above-average rain as well as chaotic weather patterns nationwide along with repeated "atmospheric rivers" throughout California. Rose growth and development are dependent on weather, and flower production is particularly impacted by inconsistent temperatures, sun and water. All of this has made it more difficult for me to predict what to do and when to do it. Typically the first flush of blooms is expected after eight to 10...

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Apr 24, 2024

A few weeks ago, PBS aired a 60-minute program about the Museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The program was so intriguing, it lured me to the oldest state capital in the country. We started our adventure in Oceanside by boarding Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner to Fullerton. After waiting a bit for the delayed train, we met our attendant on the platform outside car number 432 of the Southwest Chief. The attendant helped us store the suitcases and herded us up the narrow sta...

  • Visible address signs are key to emergency response

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Mar 28, 2024

Having your address clearly marked on your house is important in case of an emergency, so first responders can find your home in a timely manner. In rural areas like Fallbrook, this is especially important as some residents live far off the main road listed as their address. For example, my friend Margaret, who just turned 87, lives roughly a mile off a main road in Rainbow. She fell in her kitchen on Feb. 29, suffering a compound fracture to her lower right leg. She said it took her an hour to reach her phone, then another h...
