  • VFW serves hamburgers your way

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Jan 18, 2021

Every Monday night, area residents can have a hamburger their way, and support veterans at the same time. The Fallbrook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924 offers a hamburger dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. for a $6 donation. If you want two patties, it's $7. I have had their barbequed hamburgers at the VFW stand during the Summer Nite events downtown and at last year's Fall Festival of Gems on Alvarado Street. They are always delicious, but the hamburger I had this Monday night, Feb....

  • A rainbow of colors blooms in Fallbrook

    Lucette Moramarco, Lucette Moramarco|Updated May 20, 2020

For those of us who sit at desks all day, whether at the office or at home, going for a walk is a good way to destress and get some exercise. I have been trying to go walking around my neighborhood more often the last few months and am enjoying seeing all the flowers blooming this spring. I know the names of quite a few of the flowers but am having to look up some of them in online searches to discover what they are called. My dad could always identify what kind of fruit and...

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Apr 2, 2020

The stay at home order that went into effect March 19 not only closed schools, restaurants, theaters and gyms, it also closed churches which have responded in a variety of ways. While some churches were already streaming their services online, many churches did not even have updated websites. Now, almost all local churches are offering either livestreaming services on their websites or posting taped services on YouTube. On the website of SonRise Christian Fellowship, Pastor Greg Coppock posted a message: "We are coming...

  • Food pantry needs volunteers

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Mar 26, 2020

In the first week after government restrictions were implemented to combat the coronavirus, Fallbrook Food Pantry gained 140 families in client enrollment. This increase in needy families is not the only side effect of COVID-19 that the pantry has to cope with. The majority of the pantry's volunteers are over age 65; as seniors, they have been advised to stay home away from people. So, they are not volunteering at the pantry which is left short-handed. Without volunteers, the pantry cannot easily manage the amount of food it...

  • Initiative would benefit stem cell research

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Mar 13, 2020

While it is estimated that more than 60,000 people in San Diego County are affected by Parkinson's disease, there are at least 70 residents here in the Fallbrook area who have it. These figures mean a proposed initiative for funding research for regenerative medicine could have a significant impact on many local families. Back in 2004, Proposition 71 was approved by almost 60% of voters in California. As a result, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine was established and partially funded. According to CIRM,...

  • Learn the art of thrifting

    Lucette Moramarco, Associate Editor|Updated Jan 11, 2020

Thrift stores thrive on the fact that "one man's junk is another man's treasure." Visiting thrift stores can not only satisfy a yen to shop, but also save shoppers money and put discarded objects to good use. As many people donate items to these stores, there is an endless supply of "new" stock to look at. Back in May, when I took several car loads of stuff to the local thrift stores, I wasn't the only one cleaning house while moving as a few of the thrift stores temporarily s...
