  • County launches evacuation plan focused on vulnerable people

Yvette Urrea Moe, San Diego County Communications Office|Updated Feb 3, 2020

If you needed to evacuate for an emergency, could you just get in your car and go? For some residents, the answer may be “no” because they lack transportation, need additional help with medical equipment or gathering items in their home. Studies have shown that during a disaster, older adults or people with disabilities, or access and functional needs have added challenges when faced with evacuation. This information inspired the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services to come up with the Neighborhood Evacuation Team pr...

  • Re: 'Real Estate Round-Up: SOS – Vote wisely' [Village News, Voges Letter, 1/9/20]

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

Dear Ms. Voges, Since you do not know me, your accusations of my motives are based on absolutely nothing other than the fact that I am a licensed real estate broker. That would be akin to accusing a dentist of opposing a new law that prevented thousands of patients from receiving adequate dental care, as self-serving. The facts of Measure A were accurately spelled out in my article, so I will not reiterate them, except to restate that the people who will suffer the most if Measure A were to pass are middle class workforce...

  • Groups endorse Measure A

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

Fallbrook Climate Action Team joins the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter and Climate Action Campaign in endorsing Measure A. Living in unincorporated San Diego County, we know firsthand the danger of building sprawl developments in the back country. Some people lost their homes in the Lilac Fire. Others had to evacuate. This time we all made it, but in Paradise people died on the narrow roads. We know too well the congestion on Highways 15, 76, 78 and 5. We are aware that San Diego County has not decreased greenhouse gas...

  • Re: In split vote, Fallbrook Union Elementary board approves raises for superintendent, other administrators [Village News website, 1/24/20]

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

I am disappointed by the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District’s 4-1 decision Jan. 21, to not separate agenda item V.2. Action: Salary Increase for Management, Confidential and Unrepresented Employees into separate items for voting. Having done so would have provided the transparency and accountability required to make the fiscally and ethically responsible decisions these items deserve. The manner in which this decision was made is very concerning. As a result, our superintendent was given yet another salary increase o...

  • Programs for homeless need to be effective

    Jim Desmond, Fifth District|Updated Feb 2, 2020

Homelessness in California is at extremely high levels and San Diego, while better than San Francisco and Los Angeles, has a steadily rising homeless population. Last week, I partnered with Supervisor Jacob on addressing the homeless population in San Diego’s unincorporated area. In our Board Letter, I’ve asked county staff to take a look at existing buildings, which could be used for transitional housing. Also, the county will be adding four additional deputies to the HART program. The value of human life must always be a f...

Fallbrook Union High School’s Varsity Girls Basketball head coach Jessica Ramirez has the Warriors in third place in the Valley League with a 2-2 record and 13-8 record on the season. Last week was a tough one for the Warriors, however, as they suffered two league losses after starting the Valley League season 2-0. The Warriors took an early 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter on the road against Mission Vista on Friday, Jan. 24, but the Warriors’ offense sputtered the rest of the way, falling 65-42. That loss cam...

  • Every body deserves a massage day

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

FALLBROOK – When Laurel Lozzi joined her father Craig Lozzi's massage practice almost four years ago, the idea was that he would do his best to share his decades of experience in the field of bodywork with her and that she could gleam some nuggets to add to her already expanding skill set. That has been the case, and yet there have been some perhaps unexpected outcomes from this father-daughter team at Transcendent Touch. "Experience in any given field is always valuable," Cra...

  • Healthy Habits for Bonsall and Fallbrook Folks: Alopecia – The attack of the immune system

Megan Johnson McCullough, Special to Village News|Updated Feb 2, 2020

Hair loss can be embarrassing, concerning and even a sign of a health problem. Hair might start to show up on the pillow, more on the hairbrush, in the shower drain and, in some cases, small bald spots may become noticeable. A possible cause of this excess hair loss could be from a condition called alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune disorder. This type of hair loss can also be called spot baldness. In this case, the immune system has started to attack the hair follicles....

  • Caring for fruit trees this winter

Roger Boddaert, Special to Village News|Updated Feb 2, 2020

Midwinter in Southern California is the time of year when gardeners should be taking care of their fruit trees to enjoy summer fruit for their table. With such diverse climatic zones in California, the vast array of fruit trees can produce an abundant amount of fruit for months on end with proper planning. But in order to obtain the fruit, there are some stewardship items to take into consideration, and one of them is winter pruning. The first question is, do I have the right...

  • Costly new wildfire suppression effort unlikely to prevent catastrophic fires

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

SACRAMENTO – A wildfire suppression plan adopted Dec. 30 by the California Board of Forestry could cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars but will do very little to actually reduce fire risk for communities throughout the state. Proposed by Cal Fire, the state’s fire management agency, the new Vegetation Treatment Program is expected to be ineffectual against wind-driven fires. The state’s massive financial commitment to this program is puzzling, as it is wind-driven wildfires that caused the devastating loss of li...
