  • School mornings don't have to be chaos

    The American Counseling Association|Updated Sep 13, 2019

Special to Village NewsSo what does the typical school morning look like at home? Quiet conversation over a leisurely breakfast, everyone dressed and ready to depart on time, all their books, papers and lunch neatly packed and ready to go? No? Not quite? More like a minor riot with lots of stress? If so, it’s time for a change. There’s no magic way to guarantee that the bedlam that marks those getting ready for school times in too many homes will totally disappear, but there are steps to take to help minimize the sch...

  • Teen raises money for Fallbrook Smiles Project

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

FALLBROOK – Before Gunnar Streich graduated from Bonsall High School this past June, he needed to do a senior project that included planning, executing, showing profitability and all for a charity. Streich had an unfortunate accident last year that led to his choice of Fallbrook Smiles Project, a local nonprofit. Streich was at an airsoft park at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for Memorial Day 2018 and was not wearing his mouth safety gear when he had his two front t...

  • Should you skip breakfast while dieting?

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

FALLBROOK – The secret to losing weight involves a careful balance. The number of calories that are eaten should be exceeded by the energy expended by exercise and the normal biological functions of the body. This balance often involves controlling caloric intake, such as when people cut back on portion sizes. Some people believe they can lose weight by limiting what they eat or by skipping certain meals altogether. But skipping a meal like breakfast could actually have an a...

  • Does your retirement plan account for inflation?

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

FALLBROOK – Today it's common for Americans to spend two, three or even four decades in retirement. This extended period means people have ample time to relax and achieve a bucket list of dreams; however, the flip side is that retirees need to ensure they have enough savings to last through their lifetime. One complicating factor is that inflation is a fact of life, and it can result in meaningfully higher expenses over time. Living costs increase even with modest i...

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

QUINCY, Mass. – As the condition of aging bridges, roadways, transportation resources and grids across the U.S. has increasingly become the focus of discussion, the National Fire Protection Association has issued “Renovations Needs of the U.S. Fire Service,” a new report on the fire service’s aging infrastructure. Two key findings within the report show that more than 21,000 firehouses across the country are beyond 40 years of age with total replacement costs estimated to be in the $70-$100 billion range. The report draws o...

  • There are and will be extinctions

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

There will not be a sudden 2030 human extinction. This is alarmist speculation. Except for continental scale tectonic or chemical events, extinctions are not singular events and occur after a protracted process. There have been multiple major extinctions and many lesser ones over the last 550 million years, including at least one in the tertiary not so many million years ago. Some extinctions wiped out everything, others focused on one or more branches of the biologic tree or focused primarily on a particular geography. The... Full story

  • Mixed priorities

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron|Updated Sep 13, 2019

This session several important bills were blocked in the Senate and Assembly Appropriations Committees. While good bills died, others like allowing felons to serve on juries got support. The Renter’s Tax Credit to help low and middle income renters has not been increased in decades to keep up with the cost of living. Senate Bill 248, written by Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, would have helped millions. A major priority of the legislature is tackling high housing costs, yet r... Full story

  • Re: 'I am ashamed' [Village News, Letter, 9/5/19]

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

I’ll skip the tabloid scandal material presented in the letter referenced above. The Mueller Report did not find data to support a charge of conspiracy and collusion. That could be a tribute to President Donald Trump’s ability to obstruct justice. Eight actionable obstruction of justice incidents are documented in the report. It is up to Congress to take action. I can’t personally attest to how many lies and untruths Trump has told, but according to The Washington Post, Aug. 12, “President Trump has made 12,019 false or misl... Full story

  • Thank you Dr. Strutz

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

I would like to compliment Dr. Peter Strutz and his staff for the professional and proficient performance of their service to the residents of Fallbrook. My wife and I have been patients of Strutz for many years. When we call his office, a person answers the phone, not a computer. If the call is made after normal business hours and a message is left, someone actually calls me back and not three days later but in a timely fashion. In those instances where we have experienced a medical condition which we felt was urgent, his...

  • Re: 'I am proud' [Village News, Letter, 8/22/19]

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

I am saddened and disgusted at the shortsighted and uninformed declaration of the “I am ashamed” writer. For the first time in decades, we have a president with the intestinal fortitude to fulfill his promises in spite of the massive opposition from “Establishment Washington.” Those in government for the most part are lawyers and politicians never having had a job in the real world of business. Only 8% of the Obama administration participated in a job. The following is just a portion of President Donald Trump’s accomplis... Full story

The community has been hard at work since our initial meeting in April, creating four subcommittees which have met regularly. At the meeting, attendees will hear updates from each of the subcommittees, which are infrastructure, public health, public safety and housing. They all have noteworthy information to share on the community's... Full story

  • Green Canyon and South Mission is dangerous

    Updated Sep 13, 2019

I observed what appeared to be a devastating accident at the corner of Green Canyon and South Mission Road Thursday, Sept. 5, at 5:45 p.m., involving at least two vehicles, one of which was upside-down. This sight was all too predictable, unfortunately. For years, I have traveled approximately two thousand miles per month on multiple freeways in rush hour traffic, but nothing compares to this treacherous intersection. I challenge Assemblywoman Marie Waldron and Supervisor Jim Desmond to perform traffic studies at this... Full story
